The UK's Bad Sounds Share New Video, US Tour Kicks Off Next Week
by BWW News Desk - Mar 21, 2019

UK-based Bad Sounds are excited to reveal a video for their track “How Are You Gonna Lose?” The band directed the clip and Flood Magazine premiered the video noting, “'How Are You Gonna Lose?' injects some serious soul into Bad Sounds' panoramic pop, lush with Motown horns and crisp, falsetto vocals. ”  Bad Sounds state, “We have a real soft spot for budget horror and kung fu movies, you can see a recurring style in all our videos and influences in our music too. The inspiration for the video came from watching Dario Argento's 'Suspiria' and falling in love with its aesthetic. It's a classic case of style over substance but it's done so well that it's easy to forgive. The sets and lighting are so bold and in your face that it really feels like it's set somewhere other than 'real life'. It seems to us that people are most creative when they have less to work with, and we find ourselves personally drawn to simple ideas that are done with style and care. We wanted to create something very simple and to show who we are, performing as individuals, shot in one take on 16mm film.' Watch “How Are You Gonna Lose?” here: (more...)

BWW Review: CTC Spectacular Style Inhabits Superlative World Premiere THE HOBBIT
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Mar 21, 2019

On a middle of the month March weekend, Children's Theatre Company (CTC) of Minneapolis on the United Health Group Stage, offered their audiences a Middle Earth journey when they presented the World Premiere The Hobbit.  Based on one of J.R.R. Tolkien's bestselling novels, the British actor, director and playwright Greg Banks adapted and then directed the production, which featured an original musical score by fellow Brit Tom Johnson. The classic story of Middle Earth Dwarves reclaiming their culture and treasure stolen form them by a fire breathing creature imagines adventure and exhilaration galore, enough to last an entire evening and long after the actors leave the stage. BWW Review: JOHN at Arts West
by Kelly Rogers Flynt - Mar 21, 2019

JOHN at ArtsWest is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum, nestled in a puzzle. The show is peppered with interesting bits of information, side stories, tangents, and seemingly pertinent details. However most of these bits only serve to fully realize the characters rather than apply to the plot. You can easily find yourself chasing meanings in references that are never explained or even mentioned again. The amount of detail and richness of backstory is amazing. The amount of unanswered questions is frustrating. JOHN is a show rich with characters and short on plot. (more...)

Irish Arts Center, a multidisciplinary home for contemporary Irish arts and culture, teams with internationally-acclaimed, Olivier Award-winning Irish theatre company Fishamble to present Margaret McAuliffe's The Humours of Bandon. This wonderful one-woman show (The Stage) has garnered vast acclaim across its tours of Ireland and Wales and a stop at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where The Scotsman called it a witty and poignant story that invites you to climb inside and enjoy the ride, told by a performer who has lived and breathed the world she so expertly conveys. The Humours of Bandon centers around an ambitious teenage Irish dancer and the grueling preparations she's undertaken, in her young life, to achieve. BWW Review: THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is a Perfect Recipe for Hysterical Disaster
by Tanya Seale - Mar 16, 2019

A play within a play, The Play that Goes Wrong is the tale of the Cornley University Drama Society which, despite several earlier snags, is opening their 1920s murder mystery, The Murder at Haversham Manor. In the moments just before the show opens, an audience member is recruited to help the tech crew (Ryan George as Trevor Watson and Ka-Ling Cheung as Annie Twilloil) mend a few set issues. No biggie, though. It's just a broken mantlepiece that holds several key props. And a main entrance from backstage with a door that won't stay closed. Or open. Or closed. There are a couple of floor planks that need to be nailed in, still. And there's a missing Duran Duran CD somewhere in the theatre. Oh, and a missing dog. What could possibly go wrong? Right? (more...)
