Ocean State Theatre Company Sets Upcoming Theatre Classes

By: Jan. 27, 2016

Ocean State Theatre Company is proud to announce the addition of theatre classes for students ages 9-14 to their educational offerings. The winter session, which begins February 22, will include classes focused on musical theatre, improvisation and acting.

"Here we grow again," said Producing Artistic Director, Amiee Turner. "I am so pleased that we have been able to identify several qualified professional educators to assist us with our education goals for Ocean State Theatre Company. Now, in addition to our award-winning summer camps and new vacation camps, we are able to comply with the demand for classes, which started back in 2013, when we opened the theatre."

Four classes will be offered during the winter session including:

MUSICAL THEATRE - Investigating the Song

Mondays 6:00 - 7:45 (February 22 - April 11, 2016)

Taught by Stefani Wood, this course heightens the art of just singing a song to assist young actors with a confident ability to tell the story of the song through complete performance. Students look at finding the inner voice of character through analysis, interpretation, and dissection of material. This course is a great tool for young auditioners and budding vocalists!

IMPROVISATION - Basics to a Fun Foundation

Wednesdays 6:00 - 7:45 (February 24 - April 13, 2016)

Taught by Eric Fulford (Providence Improv Guild), this class starts with the basics of improvisation; environment, character, and storytelling are all there. The foundational concept of 'Yes, And...' is introduced early. Using a mixture of short form and long form exercises, each student will have the improvisation tools to have fun on stage.

ACTING - Exploring Character Development

Thursdays 4:15 - 6:00 (February 25 - April 14, 2016)

Taught by Jason Loete, this lively course teaches actors how to create believable characters utilizing the skills and knowledge taught rather than relying on impulse and stereotypes. Young actors will learn to look for clues in the script that help determine the playwright's intentions and messages - filling in the blanks with physicality, energy and knowledge!

ACTING - Making a Scene

Thursdays 6:00 - 7:45 (February 25 - April 14, 2016)

Taught by Jason Loete, this "intensive" course explores how physicality, objective and obstacle all collide to create explosive fun in duet scene work. Working with scripts from a variety of time periods and cultures, students learn to break down a scene from a character's point of view, and also learn to build the relationship between actor, scene partner, and audience.

Winter Session Classes, for children ages 9-14, will be held at OSTC's Education Annex located at One Echo Drive in Warwick, RI (adjacent to the theatre) from February 22 - April 14. The cost for each eight week session is $225.00. Spots for all classes will be filled on a first come/first served basis. Space is limited.
