Tim Herlihy began collaborating with Adam Sandler on Saturday Night Live sketches, including Canteen Boy, while working as an attorney. He also wrote the screenplay for Billy Madison during this period. In 1994, Herlihy joined Saturday Night Live as a writer. He remained with the series after Sandler's departure in 1995, eventually becoming head writer and producer. He left the show in 1999 to focus on film work.


Herlihy wrote or co-wrote several Sandler films, including Billy Madison in 1995, Happy Gilmore in 1996, The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy in 1998, Big Daddy in 1999, and Pixels in 2015. He also appeared in Big Daddy in 1999 and played a bartender in The Wedding Singer in 1998 and The Ridiculous 6 in 2015. He wrote for and performed on Sandler's comedy albums They're All Gonna Laugh at You! in 1993, What the Hell Happened to Me? in 1996, and Shhh...Don't Tell in 2004.

In 2006, Herlihy co-wrote the book and two songs for the Broadway musical adaptation of The Wedding Singer with Chad Beguelin. The musical opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 27, 2006, and ran for 284 performances. Herlihy and Beguelin received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.

Herlihy co-wrote The Ridiculous 6 with Sandler in 2015. That year, he also returned to Saturday Night Live for an episode featuring Tracy Morgan, revisiting the Brian Fellow's Safari Planet sketch. The episode received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing and won the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy/Variety Sketch Series.
