The Frist Art Museum presents Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing, an exhibition that examines a broad range of the artist's work through the lens of social and political activism. The Frist is the only U.S. venue that is hosting this exhibition after its 2017 debut in California. In addition to presenting Lange's iconic photographs from the Great Depression, the exhibition will feature works from her early years as a studio portraitist in San Francisco, along with images of the grim conditions of incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II, naval shipyard workers of different sexes and races contributing to the patriotic cause, and inequity in our judicial system in the 1950s. Organized by the Oakland Museum of California, which houses Lange's personal archive, the exhibition will be on view in the Frist's Upper-Level Galleries from March 15 through May 27, 2019. Principal Conductor Bernard Labadieleads the ensemble in a program bookended by works of Haydn: the Overture to the music-drama L'isola disabitata and Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp Minor, "Farewell."Guest Artist Paul Lewis makes his Carnegie Hall concerto debut performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 and soprano Ying Fang will sing the aria "Non temer, amato bene," K. 490 from the 1786 Vienna version of Mozart's Idomeneo. The Hartt School welcomes two internationally acclaimed dance companies to its program this spring, Netherlands Dance Theater 2 (NDT2) and Paul Taylor 2 (T2DC). Both of these companies are renowned not only for their association with their famous main companies but also as stellar performing entities in their own right, populated by extraordinary young artists working with top-ranking choreographers. Both of the companies sought out the Hartt Dance program to initiate these projects because of its reputation for excellence and its forward looking approach to classical techniques in both Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary dance.
