The 2026 Helen Hayes Award nominations have been announced, recognizing outstanding achievement in Washington-area professional theatre. Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, and dozens of regional companies are represented across performance, direction, design, and production categories. The awards highlight the breadth of theatre work presented throughout the D.C. metropolitan area.

Signature Theatre has revealed a new slate of classes for its education programming this spring and summer. These new offerings will include Acting for All Adults, and more.

Constellation Theatre Company’s production of Head Over Heels, directed by Allison Arkell Stockman with musical direction by Walter “Bobby” McCoy, is a delightful musical filled with superb acting and energetic musical numbers. 

Deep in the bayou of the American south lies the brassy and vibrant Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood. A warm tale for these cold months, Petite Rouge is, of course, a cajun take on the classic Grimm tale, featuring a bright world of animals, songs, and life lessons.

IMAGINATION STAGE will present PETITE ROUGE: A CAJUN RED RIDING HOOD, a fresh take on the classic tale set in the Louisiana bayou.

Creative Cauldron stages a positively effervescent musical, THE BUBBLY BLACK GIRL SHEDS HER CHAMELEON SKIN, a coming-of-age story that ably balances light humorous moments with pointed questions of growing up a Black woman in the latter part of the 20th century.

Adventure Theatre MTC, will bring to the stage Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical, directed by Angelisa Gillyard, Music Directed by Elisa Rosman, and choreographed by Maurice Johnson. Learn how to purchase tickets.

In May, Creative Cauldron will present The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin. A show about a girl who is stuck between two worlds within her own identity, as she strives to make a name for herself in the bright lights of Broadway.

Cinderella: A Salsa Fairy Tale is loud, bouncy, and bilingual. The show is part of Imagination Stage's 'Greatest Hits' season, as it was originally commissioned and produced at Imagination in 2003. 

Imagination Stage, the metro DC region's largest professional theatre for young audiences and leader in positive youth development through the arts, continues its ‘Greatest Hits' season with writer/lyricist Karen Zacarías and composer Deborah Wicks La Puma's Cinderella: A Salsa Fairy Tale, running February 15 - April 7, 2024.

This evening, the 2023 Helen Hayes Awards took place at The Anthem on the District Wharf, with over 1,600 theatre-makers and theatre supporters in attendance. Esteemed Washington theatre artists Naomi Jacobson, Erika Rose, Holly Twyford, and Christopher Michael Richardson hosted an evening showcasing the vibrant and diverse community of professional theatre artists in the Washington region.

Nominations have been announced for the 37th Helen Hayes Awards, which will be presented on Monday, May 22. Nominees include productions from Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, GALA Hispanic Theatre and more.
