An eclectic group of students are set to compete in the spelling bee of their young lives. Maurer Productions OnStage presents the comical and endearing "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," complete with audience participation, at Mercer County Community College's Kelsey Theatre. Dates and show times for this Tony Award-winning musical are Fridays, June 7 and 14 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, June 8 and 15 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, June 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. (Only the matinee performances are family friendly.)

Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady, treading the boards after becoming infamous in Hollywood; and the playwright's best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series. Add to this a drama critic who's panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre-and for comedy. But don't worry: This play is sure to be the hit they have all been hoping for.

Playful Theatre Productions proudly presents "Titanic," the Tony Award-winning musical about the maiden - and only voyage - of the colossal ship that ends in tragedy at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Dates and show times for this Kelsey special event are: Fridays, April 20 and 27 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, April 21 and 28 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, April 22 and 29 at 2 p.m.

Maurer Productions OnStage (MPO) is about to celebrate life, tradition, matchmakers and miracles as the award-winning company presents the beloved Broadway classic "Fiddler on the Roof." Tevye and all the villagers from Anatevka take up residence at Mercer County Community College's (MCCC's) Kelsey Theatre Fridays, March 16 and 23 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sundays, March 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. (Matinee performances are sold out.)

Broadway may have its Tony Awards, but New Jersey does itself proud in honoring excellence in community theater across the state each fall. On Sept. 17, the New Jersey Association of Community Theaters (NJACT) hosted the Perry Awards to recognize community theater productions from the past theater season.
