Portrait of a Heart received an informal reading through Artists in Residence of Toronto in January, and another virtual reading just last week. The latest reading featured Sean Allan Krill (Jagged Little Pill), Nadia Bowers, Taylor Rose Mickens, Danny Gardner, Jete Laurence, John Allyn. It featured stage direction by Nicholas Leung and organized by creative consultant Hannah Ryan (Hamilton, An American in Paris).

Jay is trapped in a toxic home environment. Taking care of her drug-addicted mother and lonely and misunderstood younger brother, she dreams of escaping into a better world. She is presented with the chance-of-a-lifetime when winning a nation-wide essay contest to be the new writer of the final book in a beloved series left incomplete by the death of the author. However, Jay's 'dream ending' of the story is threatened when she has to collaborate with an additional, surprise contest winner. Set in the American Midwest, Jay and the Contest explores what it means to make it out of our hometown, no matter the consequences.

Directorfest began January 10 and concludes on February 4, 2020 at various locations around NYC: The New Ohio Theatre (154 Christopher Street), The Drama League Theater Center (32 Avenue of the Americas), LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (31-10 Thomson Avenue), and Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street). The festival series that began January 10, 2020 continues with an evening of short plays probing the complexity of relationships with The Sporting Life of Icarus Jones by Marcus Gardley, directed by Chika Ike, and The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, and Daniela Vlaskalic, directed by Rebecca Marzalek-Kelly. The limited engagement begins Friday, January 24, 2020 at 7:30pm for three performances through January 25, 2020 at The New Ohio Theatre (154 Christopher Street). Tickets are now on sale for the 36th annual Directorfest, the only festival in the United States dedicated to the art of stage directing. Known for its history as an identifier of the next generation of directing talent, the festival will include six fully-staged productions, a showcase concert of a new play-with-music, a town hall, and conversations with directors including 2017 Tony Award Winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent), 2014 Tony Award Winner & 2010 Drama League Founders Award for Excellence in Directing Kenny Leon (A Soldier's Play), and Intimacy Director Claire Warden (HBO's 'Mrs. Fletcher').

Charlotte's Off Broadway (Anne Lambert, producer) announced today that rush tickets are now available for the remaining performances of the Off-Broadway premiere of Confidence (and The Speech), the new play, written by Susan Lambert Hatem and directed by Hannah Ryan (Hamilton, An American in Paris) which is playing a limited engagement at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street a?" between 9th & 10th Avenues). Previews began on November 14 and the show had an official opening on November 20, 2019. Performances will continue through December 7, 2019. Rush Tickets priced at $20 (cash only) are available at the Theatre Row box office (410 West 42nd Street) one (1) hour prior to performance.

Charlotte's Off Broadway (Producer, Anne Lambert) is very happy to welcome April Armstrong (Ragtime, Carousel) to the company for the Off-Broadway premiere of Confidence (and The Speech), a new play, written by Susan Lambert Hatem and directed by Hannah Ryan (Hamilton, An American in Paris). Ms. Armstrong will portray President Jimmy Carter (replacing the previously announced Denise Burse) for a limited engagement at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street a?" between 9th & 10th Avenues). Previews will begin on Thursday, November 14 at 8pm with an official opening on Wednesday, November 20th at 8pm. Performances will continue through December 7th.
