Lake Worth Playhouse has announced its 2019/20 season!

For the final show of the 2018-2019 season, The Players Club of Swarthmore presents Sister Act, the feel- good musical comedy based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg . Sister Act earned five Tony Award nominations in 2011 including Best Musical Score with music by Alen Menkin (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid) and lyrics by Glen Slater (The Little Mermaid).Sister Act was also nominated for Best Book of a Musical written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (Cheers) and Douglas Carter Beane(Xanadu and The Little Dog Laughed). Sister Act is directed by Brian Walsh with musical direction by Ryan Goulden and choreography by Emma Bradley Dingle. Tickets are available online at www.pcstheater.org. SISTER ACT, the Musical, the Tony Award nominated show based on the 1992 Touchstone Pictures hit film of the same name, features music written by eight-time Academy Award, seven-time Golden Globe, 11-time Grammy Award and Tony Award-winning composer, Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater and Book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, The musical was originally directed by Peter Schneider. The musical will be coming to CASA 0101 Theater, 2102 East First Street (at St. Louis Street), Boyle Heights, CA 90033, April 19 - May 19, 2019. Opening Nights is Friday, April 19, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. Previews are April 12 - 14, 2019.

Inspired by the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, this uplifting new work chronicles the bold African American ensemble as they travel the world, captivating kings, queens and audiences with hymns and spiritual songs supported by their rich voices. Written and directed by Thompson with vocal arrangements and music direction by Dianne Adams McDowell, Jubilee runs April 26 - June 2, 2019 in the Kreeger Theater.

Leicester's Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome today announce the full casting for their co-production of Oprah Winfrey's hit Broadway musical, The Color Purple, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. The production, the first to be created outside of London in the UK, will play at Curve, Leicester from 28th June 13th July, followed by 16th 20th July at Birmingham Hippodrome, with a national press night at Curve on Wednesday 3rd July at 7pm.

 The 5th Avenue Theatre has announced an incredible six-show lineup for its 201920 season. First, The 5th will stage a lavish production of Austen's Pride, A New Musical of Pride and Prejudice. For the holidays, The 5th will create a brand new staging of Shrek The Musical, which premiered at The 5th in 2008. The New Year kicks off with Stu for Silverton, which continues its developmental journey as a part of The 5th's New Musical Development Program. Next comes a joyful 5th Avenue Theatre original production of Sister Act, followed by an exclusive, limited two-week engagement of Once On This Island. The season will close with an original staging of the epic masterpiece, Evita. Additionally, The 5th will host a one-week run of the national tour of Jersey Boys.

Producers Michael Harrison and David Ian have announced that Jennlee Shallow and Alexandra Burke will play the role of Rachel Marron in THE BODYGUARD at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre at selected performances from Tuesday 25 June - Saturday 6 July. I was invited to the opening night performance of Orpheus Theatre's new production of Sister Act at the Meridian Theatre @ Centrepointe. Sister Act is based on the 1992 movie of the same name, starring Whoopi Goldberg as the singing nun. Another story about a singing nun, you ask? Well this isn't your average nun… The plotline is somewhat reminiscent of the award-winning 1959 film, Some Like it Hot, starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. In Sister Act, Deloris Van Cartier (Jerusha Lewis) is an aspiring singer auditioning at her boyfriend's cocktail bar in Philadelphia. After she witnesses a mob type hit, she goes on the lam and finds reluctant sanctuary at the struggling Queen of Angels convent with the residing Mother Superior (Mary Ellen Vice). Mother Superior insists that if she is to stay in the convent, she must cast aside her "sinful" ways and abide by the same rules as the other nuns. The only thing that saves Deloris from total despair is her opportunity to help guide the convent's atrocious choir, to whom she is introduced as Sister Mary Clarence.

The feelgood musical Sisters Act come to Sweden! The premiere will take place on September 11 at the China Theater. It is a divine rap, funny and musical comedy, based on the 1992 Blockbuster movie, Sister Act, featuring Whoopi Goldberg. The musical was nominated in the US for five Tony Awards for 'Best Musical' and of course 'Best Music'. The captivating music is made by composer Alan Menken, a numerous Oscar winner, is known as the man behind many of Disney's greatest hits, eg 'Can you feel the love tonight' and 'Beauty and the beast'. In this swinging monastery, Menken has created a rosary of hits ranging from 70's disco in Barry White's spirit to perfectly tuned ballads. Of course, the musical also contains a huge dose of pat-friendly power gospel. The performance Sister Act proves once again that singing nuns definitely belong to the big musical scenes.
