Word for Word's first production of the 2020 Season is Octavio Solis's Retablos: Stories from A Life Lived Along the Border from his same titled memoir of growing up in El Paso. Retablos: Stories from A Life Lived Along the Border runs February 22 -March 15, in the Z Below Theater in San Francisco. The production is directed by Sheila Balter and Jim Cave and opens with press performance February 22 & 23, Saturday 8 PM & Sunday 3 PM (previews Feb.19- 21).

The series began back in December with Kidnapping Santa - an adult Xmas show, and was met with such success that the duo decided to continue building the series, with such monthly showcases as Kidnapping Cupid, Kidnapping Leprechauns, Kidnapping Fools, and most recently, Kidnapping Mommy and Daddy. Kidnapping Pride - the ultimate Pride show, will be the 7th show in their series, and the first one devoted around Pride month and celebrating the work and talents of the LGBT community.

This new chamber musical explores the gender continuum through the prism of a prepubescent transgender biracial girl. Written by David Valdes Greenwood, the show tells the story of how working class parents Pilar and Bird face the cracks in their marriage, their opposing parenting styles, and their fears as they negotiate their daughter's gender transition. Meanwhile, she navigates puberty, her first crush, and the possibility that YouTube holds all the answers. Original score written by Eric Mayson.

A love story like no other from playwright Qui Nguyen ( She Kills Monsters ), Vietgone, will feature innovative artists new to the San Diego REP, including director Jesca Prudencio (Ping Chong + Company) and starring Ben Levin ( Allegiant and Ugly Betty ) and Katherine Ko ( Hollywood and Angels in America ). This moving comedy begins on Thursday, January 25, 2018 and plays through Sunday, February 18, 2018 with an opening night on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Lyceum Space Theatre at San Diego REP in Horton Plaza.
