BWW Review: THE TEMPEST Delivers a Wave of Top-Notch Talent at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
by April Montgomery - February 15, 2016
A tale of mysticism, betrayal, love and the ultimate choice. THE TEMPEST is arguably one of Shakespeare's most cohesive works, with its central plot all taking place on the same day in one location. The storyline is easier to follow than some of the Bard's earlier plays, which is brought to light by the acting and direction in the Orlando Shakespeare production that opened in Central Florida on Friday night.

BWW Review: High-Energy HANDS ON A HARDBODY is Enjoyable, but Uneven at the Garden Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - February 04, 2016
Let's get this out of the way first, the 'hardbody' in the title is a truck, a Nissan pickup truck to be exact; and while the name of the musical, HANDS ON A HARDBODY, might sound a teensy bit risque, it is filled with encouraging messages and life-affirming themes set to a high energy modern score. Presented by TheatreWorks Florida, the musical runs through February 21st at the Garden Theatre, and features an extremely game and talented cast, who unfortunately is not used in a way that comes close to maximizing their immense collective talent. The musical by Doug Wright (book), Amanda Green (music and lyrics), and Trey Anastasio of the band Phish (music) is based on a 1997 documentary of the same name about a Texas contest in which the person who keeps his or her hand on a truck the longest, wins it. While the show's ensemble construction gives nearly every cast-member multiple moments to vocally shine, it seems like a substantial amount of them have been shoehorned into roles that don't exactly match up with their particular vocal ranges, resulting in fairly regular pitch issues. That not-so minor issue aside, the show is a joyous, toe-tapping celebration of all the things, good and bad, that make people special.

BWW Review: Mad Cow's Biting Comedy, ART, Makes You Question Nature of Friendship
by Matt Tamanini - January 29, 2016
Do you have a prized piece of art hanging above the mantle in your home? Above the sofa? In your bedroom? What does the choice to invest in a particular work of art say about you? What does your best friend's choice in art say about him or her? Does your friend's choice say something about you? These seemingly frivolous questions lead to a series of dramatic confrontations in Yasmina Reza's biting comedy ART, playing now at Church Street's Mad Cow Theatre through February 21st. Originally written in French, and translated by Christopher Hampton, the play, which won the 1998 Tony for Best Play, is a break-neck exploration of the nature of friendship, and how seemingly unimportant decisions can destroy decades of love and trust.

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Energetic SPUNK AND THE HARLEM LITERATI is Weighed Down by its Own Ambition
by Matt Tamanini - January 27, 2016
Ambition can be a dangerous thing, whether you are a guitar-playing drifter in early Twentieth Century Orlando, or a playwright attempting to recontextualize an outdated work. In SPUNK AND THE HARLEM LITERATI, running through January 31st, UCF Theatre professor Be Boyd attempts to take an existing play by author and playwright Zora Neale Hurston, and ham-handedly shoehorn it into a framing device that seeks to admirably put the works of Hurston and her African-American contemporaries into proper cultural context. Unfortunately, the lack of connection between the framing scenes, set on a Harlem rooftop, and those of the play proper, set in rural Eatonville, Florida, robs both of any greater significance.
