BWW Review: THE ADVENTURES OF PERICLES Serves a Feast for the Senses at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
by April Montgomery - February 28, 2016
It isn't often that an experience touches the complete range of emotions that we are capable of feeling as human beings. We buy a ticket for a show and think we might laugh at a comedy, shed a few tears in a drama or perhaps fall in love with a romance. But, is it possible to thoroughly feel all of these emotions from the same show? THE ADVENTURES OF PERICLES indeed makes this joyride of sensation possible and seamlessly entranced a willing audience at Orlando Shakespeare on opening night.

BWW Review: Mad Cow's PAINTING CHURCHES is a Touching 'Memory' Play with a Top-Notch Cast
by Matt Tamanini - February 26, 2016
'Last scene of all,/ That ends this strange eventful history,/ Is second childishness and mere oblivion,/ Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.' PAINTING CHURCHES, running through March 20th at the Mad Cow Theatre, is a memory play, but not in the way that THE GLASS MENAGERIE is. Instead, this play is about how people remember things from their past, and often how they forget them. Whether it is due to repression or dementia, or lasting importance or momentary bliss, what we forget and what we remember shapes everything that we think and feel about our lives.

BWW Review: KINKY BOOTS is a Fabulously Good Time that Just Might Change Your Mind
by Matt Tamanini - February 24, 2016
I have a confession to make; when the 2015-2016 Broadway Series was announced for Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, KINKY BOOTS was not one of the shows that I was most excited to see. Yeah, I knew that the show had won six Tony Awards including Best Musical; yeah, I knew that it had a positive, family-friendly message that I was excited to see on stage; and yeah, I knew that the tour cast was made up of fantastic performers, many of whom I have been a fan of for years. However, since the show opened on Broadway in 2013, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, the shiny, brightly colored costumes and the score's string of pop songs by Cyndi Lauper have always given me the sense that it was little more than a saccharine, bubble gum musical that left audiences feeling good and tapping their toes, but didn't have the emotional or creative substance that I look for in musicals of this caliber. I mean, how could it? Just look at it; based on the show's high-energy production numbers, I assumed that the show was one of those novelties that always leaves you entertained, but rarely leaves you satisfied.
BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Silent REELING Recreates Buster Keaton Silliness
by Matt Tamanini - February 24, 2016
We've all heard the saying, 'They don't make 'em like they used to.' Now, thanks to Theatre UCF's REELING, running through February 28th, they actually do still make 'em like they used to, complete with banana peels, pratfalls, and not a single spoken word. This one-of-a-kind play recreates the zany charms and enthusiastic silliness of the classic silent films of Buster Keaton. Written by Barry Kornhauser, REELING features an original, era-appropriate soundtrack by Michael Koerner that underscores all of the madcap action. While REELING won't make you forget the brilliance of Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle, or Charlie Chaplin, it will make you nostalgic for a time when there was no greater revenge than a pie in the face.

BWW Review: Brilliant EXPECTING ISABEL Balances Humor and Heartbreak at Annie Russell
by Matt Tamanini - February 18, 2016
There is simply no overstating how fortunate Central Florida theatre fans are to have quality collegiate theatre programs in the area. While ticket sales are obviously still important for Theatre UCF and the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College, ultimately, their mission is not to produce the most commercially viable theatrical season in town; their goal is to give their talented students opportunities to challenge themselves, to learn about all aspects of their chosen profession, and to become the most well-rounded theatre artists that they can. And, because of this fact, Orlando is regularly blessed with brilliant productions like EXPECTING ISABEL, running at Rollins through Saturday, February 20th, that they might not otherwise be privileged to see.
