Combining dazzling surrealism, poetic movement, and sheer physical strength, Pilobolus makes a highly-anticipated return to The Joyce Theater this summer. With two programs playing in repertory over a three-week residency, the dance theater company equally known for its gymnastic dexterity and sharp wit will bring a mix of vintage audience favorites and fresh work never before seen at The Joyce. Program A features Rushes, a playful and poignant instant classic, and the Joycepremiere of Branches, taking the audience on a journey through nature. Included in Program B areUntitled, an iconic Pilobolus work in which women rise to twice their height, and the classic Day Two, ending with a playful romp in the rain.

Pilobolus began at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1971. In the nearly five decades since, Pilobolus has performed live in over 60 countries for more than 4 million people, including, on Broadway, at the Oscars, at 3 Olympic games, and has appeared on television, in movies, in advertisements seen by more than a billion viewers. Pilobolus teaches its methods to schools and to businesses, and has over 120 dance works in its repertory. The company continues to propel the seeds of expression via human movement to every corner of the world, collaborating with leading artists and scientists to make innovative movement work on stage and on recorded media.

In 2018, Pilobolus launched the Five Senses Festival, a three-week arts festival bringing together artists, movers, and thinkers from many disciplines - to make immersive experiences through performances, interactive workshops, site-specific art installations, community meals, and more.

The company's ability to keep growing and changing each year while reaching new audiences and exploring new visual and musical planes has been critical to its sustained popularity.

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor ofJoyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also presented dance at Lincoln Center since 2012, and launched JoyceUnleashed in 2014 to feature emerging and experimental artists. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K-12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce's annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000.
