Nominated for 2 Drama Desk Awards (Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Director of a Musical), THE GOLDEN BRIDE is a 1923 Yiddish musical comedy that returned to the stage this past winter for the first time in almost 70 years. The New York Times called the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene's hit revival "deeply satisfying...a revelation." THE GOLDEN BRIDE will return to the stage at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in July for a limited encore engagement, but on May 4th the Museum of the City of New York will offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes talk with the show's creative team including selected songs performed by Rachel Policar and other members of the cast. This program explores the themes of the Museum's new exhibition, New York's Yiddish Theater: From the Bowery to Broadway and includes a viewing of the exhibition and a reception. The Museum of The City of New York is located at 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street in Manhattan. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, available at www.mcny.org. Anyone who purchases a ticket to the event will receive a FREE ticket to the preview performance of their choice (July 4 - July 10) for THE GOLDEN BRIDE.
In THE GOLDEN BRIDE, a beautiful young woman named Goldele, abandoned as a child, receives an unexpected inheritance and sets off on a journey across the seas to claim her estate, find her mother and offer her hand to the man who can help. With music by famed Yiddish composer Joseph Rumshinsky, libretto by Frieda Freiman and lyrics by Louis Gilrod, this long-running popular romantic comedy premiered in 1923 and was revived consistently and presented internationally through the 1940's, but was lost to time following the Second World War. In 1984, Dr. Michael Ochs, former head of the music library at Harvard unearthed an original vocal score and manuscript for Di Goldene Kale and spent a number of years translating, researching and reconstructing this nearly-forgotten treasure. Participating in the May 4th event are Drama Desk award nominees Bryna Wasserman (The Golden Land, On Second Avenue) and NYTF Associate Director Motl Didner (Fyvush Finkel Live); music archeologist Michael Ochs; music director Zalmen Mlotek (Broadway's Those Were the Days), costume designer Izzy Fields (Roundabout's Consent); NYTF Executive Producer Christopher Massimine (Broadway's It Shoulda Been You and American Idiot) and performers Glenn Seven Allen and Jillian Gottlieb.Videos
