5th Wall Theatre and TheatreLAB are teaming up again to co-produce the Women's Theatre Festival beginning March 27, 2019. With the increased focus on Women's Rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the #MeToo movement, the Artistic Directors of 5th Wall Theatre and TheatreLAB, Carol Piersol and Deejay Gray, have created this festival to celebrate, champion, and advance women's rights, women's stories, and the work of female theatre artists in Richmond.

The Bluest Eye, directed by Khanisha Foster, follows the story of young Pecola in 1940's Ohio who is pregnant at her father's hands. She is taken in by a loving family and cared for by brilliant and kind sisters, Frieda and Claudia. The character-driven play, both poetic and daringly funny, illuminates the destructive powers of racism and class dynamics while exploring the power of community through exquisite storytelling. The Bluest Eye is produced in collaboration with Norfolk State University Theatre Company.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) includes Virginia Stage Company as one of the recipients of its first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. The announcement includes three of the agency's funding categories: Art Works and Challenge America to support projects by nonprofit organizations, and Creative Writing Fellowships. Through these grants, the NEA supports local economies and preserves American heritage while embracing new forms of creative expression.

Creative Cauldron Receives 2019 Dominion Energy ArtStars Award

In late January, Creative Cauldron was honored with a Dominion Energy ArtStars Award for our performing and visual arts education programs serving multi-generational students. Creative Cauldron was one of five non-profit organizations across Virginia to be recognized as 2019 Dominion Energy ArtStars for inspiring people of all ages in creative endeavors. Each organization received a Shining Star award and a $10,000 grant to use towards their winning arts or cultural education program. Hunter Applewhite, President of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, presented the award during the annual Art Works for Virginia conference sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
