CROWNS Returns To Virginia Stage

After breaking box office records in 2006, one of the most Popular Productions in Virginia Stage's history returns with a star-studded cast. In this gospel musical by Regina Taylor, 17-year-old Yolanda travels south in a coming of age story that is a testament to love, sisterhood, and family, where she learns that a hat can be more than a fashion statement. Multiple generations of women tell stories of life's most memorable moments with their hats serving as allegories about the wonders of life - all with a flair of "hattitude."

This year's production of Crowns features a selection of hats donated by Donna Speller Turner, who wears many hats in the Hampton Roads community - philanthropist, mentor, entrepreneur, and staunch supporter of the arts. Her generous donation of over 50 hats to the Virginia Stage each have their own unique story passed down through multiple generations, much like the tales told on stage in this fan-favorite production. Crowns begins previews on May 9 with an official opening night on Saturday, May 12 and closes May 27. Tickets range between $20 - $55 with discounts for groups, students, and the military. For more information about group tickets and events, contact Heather Plym at hplym@vastage.org.

Next Season Virginia Stage celebrates their 40th year at the Wells Theatre in the heart of Downtown Norfolk. More information on the upcoming shows and memberships can be found at vastage.org/season40. Highlights include a community-driven Our Town, the oft-requested return of Always... Patsy Cline, and the Tony-Award winning musical Fun Home.

Interviews can be arranged with members of the cast, crew, creative team, or staff of Virginia Stage Company. All reviews are welcome, and tickets can be provided to anyone who wishes to see the production for these purposes.

Virginia Stage Company is Southeastern Virginia's leading theatre destination, serving an audience of over 70,000 annually, both at the Wells Theatre and throughout the community. Virginia Stage Company's mission is to "enrich, educate, and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality."
