AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY THEATER ARTS DEPARTMENT The season concludes with Lauren Gunderson’s SILENT SKY Azusa Pacific University’s Theater Arts Department cocludes the 2023-24 season with Silent Sky. Silent Sky is a beatufiul story that examines the real life 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt.Ms Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers’ dedication changed the way we understaond both the heavens and Earth. The production is directed by adjunct instructor, Andi Chapman. AN alumna of The American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women. Andi is also a selected participant of the prestigious Lincoln Center Directors Lab. Her directing includes productions at Noise Within, Boston Court, Kirk Douglas Theatre, Wallis Theater, to a name a few. She is the associate artistic director of the Ebony Repertory Theater. About Silent Sky, Andi comments “Henrietta Leavitt’s story is a reminder of the remarkable resilience and determination of a woman in the face of societal challenges. Despite the dismissive attitudes towards woemn’s ideas during the 19th century.” Guest Designer Nick Santiago will design the projections with APU Faculty Professor Christopher Keene designing the set and Technical Director, Cameron Harris designing Lights and Sound .Award-winning Wendell Carmichael will design the costumes.. The plays and musicals are produced through a program of rigorous training. The Department of Theater Arts prepares outstanding, innovative, and influential artists in an ever-growing and multi-faceted performing arts profession. The department is nationally ranked BFA in Acting for The Stage and Screen program. Silent Sky will be presented on the West Campus of Azusa Pacific University in the Black Box Theater, April 11-20.
