Brian Friel's Translations takes us to 1833 Ireland and a rural schoolroom where students barter milk and eggs for a chance to learn Greek and Latin, far removed from their hardscrabble lives and their everyday Gaelic language. When English soldiers come to map and Anglicize the Irish names of the area, they spark great humor, lively romance, and heartbreaking conflict. The play explores the power struggle of languages and cultures with a tender and suspenseful story, and some unforgettable characters.

Directing Translations is guest Artist Terry Layman. "Brian Friel's Translations is a rich and challenging play about language, conquest, love, and survival, full of relevance to events today. This ensemble cast is exploring the passion and humor of the play with great commitment and clarity," says Layman.

The show features third and fourth year actor training and music theatre students from across the country. Fourth year actor training majors include Sal Mitsou of Farmington, CT, as Yolland; Alec Shamas of Wichita, KS, as Doalty; Bob Sheire of Stafford, VA, as Owen; Nathan Johnson of Mattapan, MA, as Lancey; Shaylan Glejzer of Gilford, NH, as Bridget; Chelsea Farthing of Alliance, OH, as Sarah; and April Glick of Fairfax, VA, as Maire. Third year music theatre major Kevin Geiss of Carmel, CT, joins the cast as Jimmy Jack; Michael Millan of Bay Shore, NY, as Manus; and Alex Levin of Larkspur, CO, as Hugh.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre. With more than 400 concerts, recitals, plays, master classes, dance performances, and musical theatre productions a year, performance is central to Hartt's curriculum.
