DAVID BOWIE IS Dinner Series by The Norm at Brooklyn Museum
As a culinary complement to the Brooklyn Museum's blockbuster David Bowie Is exhibition, The Norm, the museum's full-service restaurant, will celebrate the life and career of the barrier-busting Bowie with four monthly dinners, starting April 22. The dinners will highlight the important phases of the artist's body of work, which took place in, or were greatly influenced by, four major urban centers - Berlin, Tokyo, Philadelphia and, of course, London. Each of the four-course dinners will reflect the foodways of one of the cities, while drawing inspiration from the corresponding period of Bowie's life. The Norm's Michelin-starred executive chef (and big Bowie fan!), Saul Bolton will be on hand to share insights about the creation of the menus; while Matthew Yokobosky, the Brooklyn Museum's director of exhibition design, will address the history of David Bowie Is, along with how he conceived and executed the format of the exhibit's installation at its last stop on its three-year global tour.
The first dinner is the series, themed Berlin Street Food, will be presented Sunday, April 22, starting at 4:30 with a David Bowie-inspired welcome cocktail. The early start assures plenty of time to explore David Bowie Is (one ticket option includes the $30 admittance to the exhibit) as well as savor dishes such as Spaetzle with Fried Onions and Scallions and Currywurst. Bowie Buzz at The Norm will be enhanced by music from the "Berlin Trilogy," the three studio albums promoted by Bowie's late 70s three-year residence in Berlin and by the display of a rare collection of photographs of the artist. All were taken by famed Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita, whose 40-year collaboration with Bowie resulted in some of the most iconic images of him.
The second David Bowie Is Dinner, dubbed TokyoPop! Will take place on May 20. The Philadelphia dinner will follow on June 10, while London's event will be July 1. The Norm takes diners on a gustatory exploration of Brooklyn's cultural diversity, while also drawing inspiration from some of the Brooklyn Museum's programming. In fact, for the duration of the David Bowie Is exhibition through July 15, the restaurant's menus will be seasoned by Bowie-ized food and drink. Such exhibit complementing initiatives as this and the David Bowie Is Dinner Series reflect the strong commitment to the arts, which is an important DNA element of Great Performances, www.greatperformances.com, the premiere catering and retail hospitality that operates Norm.
