No surprise here. Although, it’s nice seeing Jeff Romley has joined the production team.

YAY!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

You’re not alone Jordan! I too tried to get tickets for the Off-Broadway production but wasn’t lucky either.

Happy they're waiting. Hopefully with the majority of this cast.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The press confirmed it. This is legit.

Being a Sondheim fan for the past 15 years has been a gift that keeps on giving. 3 years ago if you had said that Merrily would be revived on Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff, it would have seemed like fan fiction dreaming.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Great news! Between the recent productions of Company, Into the Woods, Merrily, and Sweeney, we sure are living the golden age of Sondheim revivals!

It will be interesting to see if this title goes from flop to hit status… with those stars, it’ll be raking in the dough for some time.

Great news! Do you think it will be a limited engagement in the fall until January 2024 or an open run?

It really is the golden age of Sondheim revivals! And they’re all amazing productions, well let’s hope Sweeney is as good as the others.

So happy that it is transferring, but it will lose something in a traditional theater.  Circle in the Square or Helen Hayes would be ideal for this show.  It was wonderful seeing the show in the small NYTW space.  Tickets pop up every now and then for the current production.  Even with the transfer, you should still try to see it in this space.

Shocked, I tell ya', SHOCKED.

But REALLY happy, as I got shut out of tix, too. There is almost no way this doesn't transfer with the cast intact....and, I can't imagine it will be anything but a limited engagement...6 months at most. (As my guess.)

Edited because my fingers betrayed me.

I would expect a bare minimum run of 6 months with possible extension built in pending demand. Radcliffe did a year in H2$ when he was arguably a bigger star than he is now.

But “fall 2023” could mean a September opening, or a December opening.

Maybe a late 2023 opening at a decent-sized theatre to get a nice rush of Sondheim devotees and Actor fans (who I assume are the main market of the show), with weeks reserved after the Tonys for a final extension if they do well till the end of summer and close up shop in profit. Personally, I think this would make more financial sense than a tiny theatre where they won’t make enough money in a quick enough time. I don’t think the strategy should be opening in a small theatre and hoping that there is enough word of mouth to keep it going even without stars for a while. Just not that kind of show IMO. To me this feels like another show that will work best if it opens with a big bang for a limited time (like Into the Woods, Follies, War Paint etc)

If I had to guess, something feels right about this going into one of the mid-size three levels east of Times Square. It is 100% vibes-based assessment, but I could see this at the Jones, Hudson, Lyceum, or Belasco for some reason. I definitely think it'll aim for 1100 seats or less.

Saw this news and fell back asleep where I had a dream the show was announced with Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint and you could only get tickets if you could produce a Patronus at the box office and started freaking out that I didn’t study hard enough and then woke up.

Hudson, prob, given the family ties. Good theater for it.

But the “we are in a golden age of Sondheim…” I mean I was in nyc for close to 8 years and felt like there was a Sondheim revival or concert in some capacity every season? We had Sweeney off Broadway for awhile, Passion off Broadway for a while, merrily off Broadway. Into the woods off Broadway, Jake in Sunday in the park, Company.

Not complaining but it’s not like it’s been decades since we’ve had Sondheim on Broadway.

So glad this is happening! Although sad the only time I can make it to NY is summer and not fall.
