I know absolutely nothing about the show, besides the fact that dreamy Matt Bogart is in it so I’m excited to go in a couple weeks.

I'll be trying to catch it during the first week of previews. One of only a handful of new musicals to see on my 2 week trip.

I really do not understand why there is so much hate and disinterest towards this show. The music we’ve heard so far sounds absolutely gorgeous I thought!

Ah yes that’ll do it. That’s a shame for the cast, they seem like a really talented bunch

"Announcing the @ParadiseSquare lottery! On the day before the performance patrons are invited to enter the Paradise Square Lottery at https://paradisesquarelottery.com by 3pm. Winners may purchase up to 2 tickets at $32 each (plus $4 service charge per ticket)."

I’m hoping this runs long enough for Joaquina Kulakango to, at least, nab a tony nomination.

There’s a song that fills the air, when the Five Points comes alive…

The new musical Paradise Square begins previews tomorrow night at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, prior to an April 3 official opening. The show features music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Masi Asare and Nathan Tysen, book by Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Craig Lucas, and Larry Kirwan, choreography by Bill T. Jones, and direction by Moisés Kaufman. Paradise Square boasts an impressive company of 40, led by principal cast members Joaquina Kalukango, Chilina Kennedy, John Dossett, Sidney DuPont, A.J. Shively, Matt Bogart, Nathaniel Stampley, Gabrielle McClinton, Kevin Dennis, and Jacob Fishel.

“New York, 1863. As the Civil War rages on, free Black Americans and Irish immigrants live and love together in the unlikeliest of neighborhoods – the dangerous streets and crumbling tenement houses of Lower Manhattan’s notorious Five Points slum. The amalgamation between the communities took its most exuberant form with raucous dance contests on the floors of the neighborhood bars and dance halls. It is here in the Five Points where tap dancing was born. But this racial equilibrium would come to a sharp end when President Lincoln’s need to institute the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army would incite the deadly NY Draft Riots of July 1863.

Within this galvanizing story of racial harmony undone by a country at war with itself, we meet the denizens of a local saloon called Paradise Square. These characters include the indomitable Black woman who owns it; her Irish-Catholic sister-in-law and her Black minister husband; a conflicted newly arrived Irish immigrant; a fearless freedom seeker; an anti-abolitionist political boss; and a penniless songwriter trying to capture it all. They have conflicting notions of what it means to be an American while living through one of the most tumultuous eras in our country’s history.”

Since the conversation has already started… who else is going?

Oh look, a bibu!

I’ll be there tonight! First time back in the city since Feb 2020— and my first ever 1st preview performance. Over the moon and so grateful to be back.

Love what has been shared of the score thus far on social, I’ll post my thoughts. Won the lottery and have left orchestra tickets.

Just out of curiosity, do the people hating this show just hate it because Drabinsky? Don't get me wrong, he is a wicked and cruel man that I completely resent, but is there anything genuinely wrong with the show?

Between the Chicago tryout and the Barrymore previews, I hope the timeline of the dance contest has been corrected.

In Chicago, Nelly offers the prize money to Owen, indicating that he won the dance competition. But Washington Henry arrives, asking for his chance to dance. Nelly then flips a coin to determine if Owen or Washington Henry would dance first.

“BUT OWEN JUST DANCED!” I was silently screaming in ChiTown.

There’s a lot to love in this show, with its lush orchestrations, beautiful songs, performances, fascinating movement and dance, and multi-level set.

Looking forward to seeing a performance in late April.

That, plus the mixed-to-negative response from the Chicago OOT tryout, and the rumors re: finances and the director's strength over the production meaning that change may not be drastic. Will be curious to see if anyone who saw it in Chicago will be seeing early previews here and can assess changes.

The critical response in Chicago was not mixed or negative, it was overwhelmingly positive. Still--nobody came.

That's a great reason to attend something. Looks and sounds beautiful. Excited for people going tonight and reporting back. It may have changed from Chicago so Im really curious what kind of shape this is in. It's got to advertise more and frankly just better.
