So...

Can someone explain to me how Broadway can reopen for Diana the Musical to film for Netflix but we cant open the theatres for the public?

What is Equity doing about it?

Do you have a link regarding the Broadway production of Diana being filmed for Netflix? This is the first I am hearing anything about this, and a quick Google search yielded no results...

Other than a documentary on Diana (unrelated to the musical) that was announced in May, there is no credible source indicating that the musical is being filmed for Netflix.

Whether it's true or not, does someone really have to explain the huge difference between filming a show with no audience and having a live performance in front of 1,000+ people?

Like the others said, this is the first I’m hearing of this. Curious to hear where you heard this.

But to suggest a potential answer to your question: I’m assuming there either wouldn’t be an audience, or there would be just a few people in the audience social distancing, probably by invite only. Also, I think filming for TV and movies has now been allowed to start getting underway again, in some capacity, so maybe they could get away with it under those parameters?

As for the actors’ safety: I haven’t seen Diana, so I don’t know whether the content would lend itself to adjustments in the staging that allow for physical distancing. Is there a lot of hugging? A lot of kissing? A lot of scenes with big crowds? A lot of group dance numbers with a lot of people sweating? I don’t personally know. But it it doesn’t have a lot of that, it would make filming more likely. I would be curious to hear from someone who has seen the show.

First of all, your title is mis-leading. You should add a question mark. Second, Diana, the fllm starring Naomi Watts has nothing to do with the musical. Yes, the film is coming to Netflix but not the stage show. Broadway isn't open in 2020. Do your research before starting threads like this in the future. Thank you.

That trickster Eauity at it again! 

I do love this concept though. Broadway having an open sign that they can just flip on for Netflix, so business resumes as per usual except theaters stay closed apparently. Diana, whoever she is, is filmed. They close up shop. Grrr at least open the theaters so people can get exposed to this thing!!!!!!! Eauity!!!!!!!!!!

I have a good friend that works on the show that has heard nothing about this. They aren't even allowed inside the theater.

True, but last time it happened, troynow ended up being correct. And this time it seems to have just been a misunderstanding about the 2013 film of the same name.

The wardrobe crew had a work call a few weeks ago. I’m not sure if it’s related to this or was a one off however

Productions have been doing Zoom rehearsals since shutdown.  All upcoming TV shows have already done their table reads via Zoom so things have continued on a regular basis though the work is still on pause.

No, no there is not. There is zero mention of this anywhere other than from what you’re saying. Furthermore,  considering that Equity has been in an uphill climb trying to make sure that their members can potentially work and be in an environment that is safe, that this, of all things on Broadway would suddenly be the one to get the green light on this? And, furthermore, why would any producer do this for a show that was forced to shut down early in previews?

Not sure if it's for Netflix, but @troynow is correct that they are filming Diana at the end of the month in the empty theater. Can't reveal the source but it's happening.
