The main difference between Hadestown and Great Comet's best musical chances is that Great Comet had to go up against the juggernaut that is Dear Evan Hansen and Hadestown has much easier competition. I'm not a voter and am not in the industry, but I'd bet that Dear Evan Hansen would easily beat Hadestown. If Hadestown even only had to go up against Come From Away, I think Come From Away would take it.

If The Prom wins over Hadestown with those mediocre songs and meh story.. Maaaann...

I wish I felt as connected to The Prom as most people on this board but I just felt so disconnected because the music was so bad [to me]. I haven't seen Aint Too Proud or Tootise yet, but based on all the reviews I'd imagine those would be better contenders

I agree with you totally.  I enjoyed The Prom; in fact, I had a smile on my face throughout most of the show,  but specifically because of the book and the two leads.  I thought the score was mediocre at best, the sets and costumes beyond tacky at Broadway prices, the choreography just not very good.

I really liked the score for the Prom but that’s just me. I think it’s stronger than the score for Tootsie, but obviously Hadestown will take score.

This. I was very surprised to see this as such a common complaint, when it seemed to just fly by for me. I didn’t feel like they needed to trim it, and I’m not sure where they could.

Word of mouth for The Prom is infinitely better than that of Tootsie, which I haven’t heard a single positive thing from in my social circle.

I think it’ll be a Prom vs. Hadestown race, but there’s no competition there. Hadestown is the best musical of the season by far, and it will win. I’m sure people will try and make it seem like a close call, but come on.

I think the nominees will be:

Ain’t Too Proud
Be More Chill
Hadestown
Tootsie
The Prom

Lord, I love it when some of you think you know WHY voters made their (conspiracy) decisions.

And, to the above poster...I certainly HOPE no decisions are made based on a possibly appearance by a celebrity (esp one not even appearing in the show). Hopefully the nominators aren't concerning themselves with that.

Personally, I AM tired of movie-to-musical shows, as I am with the bio-musical - both of which we are inundated with this season. However, good is good. When I walk into a theater, I want to be drawn in, transported, moved - so quality is far more important than the source of the material.

And before everyone gets all high and mighty on Hadestown (which I love) those myths which it draws inspiration from have been around for HUNDREDS of years. Sure, its possibly "more" original than a film adaptation, its still an adaptation of existing material.

Be More Chill isn't an original musical. It's based on a book.

And last year's winner was adapted from a film.

Word of mouth for The Prom is infinitely better than that of Tootsie, which I haven’t heard a single positive thing from in my social circle. 

Nobody from my social circle has ever even mentioned The Prom.  So, I guess it's not even being nominated for anything.

Hadestown is the best musical of the season by far, and it will win. I’m sure people will try and make it seem like a close call, but come on.

In that case, just cancel the broadcast.  Your crystal ball has spoiled it for everyone.

They'd invite her on the broadcast just because the show is this season (or for Block's nomination).  The Tonys have invited celebrities many times in the past to perform who didn't even have anything to do with any of the shows.  They've never needed to nominate a show for best musical just to get a celebrity in the broadcast (and the celebrity may not even be want or be available to appear).

I saw and really enjoyed The Prom (especial Beth Leavel And Caitlin Kinnunan’s performances) but I’ll be very disappointed if it wins out over Hadestown, which I thought was spectacular. The Prom was a lot of fun but overall a little too predictable and wasn’t as great in the 2nd act.

Out of the shows I’ve seen this season, I’d rank it as:
1. Hadestown
2. Tootsie
3. The Prom
4. The Cher Show

Am seeing Be More Chill next week but not expecting it to impact my rankings. Beetlejuice being nominated would be a travesty. Ain’t Too Proud may get the nomination over Cher since it had good reviews and is doing well, but I have no interest in the music so I won’t be seeing it.

I really disliked The Prom. It's a shoo-in for a nomination, being a completely original musical in the context of other recreations or biopics this season. I think there's no way it's going to win, though, not with Hadestown there. 

I think Ain't Too Proud will get a nomination, because it's been doing very well with audiences (which isn't a strong indicator, I know), but critics didn't hate it. I've heard it's more than the current average story-of-a-singer's-life jukebox musical.

Exactly.  If Cher is willing to appear on the Tonys in any way, shape or fashion it will happen --- even if the show receives zero nominations.

Yeah, Cher is the Springsteen of this year. They should be so lucky to get her to perform. (And since she has a financial stake in the show and already did the Fallon performance, hopefully she'll oblige.)

I LOATHED  both Hadestown and The Prom! I hope Tootsie sweeps, although I'm fairly certain it won't win Best Score or Scenic Design.

Cher has already performed with the leading ladies of The Cher Show on a couple of evening talk shows. I’m not sure it would really be that much of a coup at this point to have her perform again on the Tony Awards. But yes, obviously if the producers of the show want to pay for it, The Cher Show (and Cher along with it) could still perform even if it’s not nominated for Best Musical (I suspect it won’t be).

For the record, there WILL be 5 nominees in the Best Musical category. Since there are more than 9 eligible shows (11 to be exact), there will be an automatic 5 nominees. It's only when there are between 5 and 8 eligible productions where there is an automatic 4 with a potential 5th based on votes.

My opinion is based on very little as I haven't been that motivated to see the shows from this season. (I'm planning on seeing Hadestown and Tootside and maybe getting to Ain't Too Proud and The Cher Show at some point but I have little to no interest in the others.)

I'm assuming Hadestown and Tootsie are locks for the big awards. I think The Prom will get in there but I don't know if it's as popular with young people as Be More Chill so I'm curious to see if BMC can pick up any nominations in an attempt to drum up interest in the Tony Awards. I think The Cher Show will likely get acting and costume nominations (especially after Summer got acting nominations) so I wonder if that will be enough or it will still get into the Best Musical race. Ain't Too Proud seems like a solid choice for any remaining nominations while I'd be surprised if Beetlejuice got anything besides technical and directing nominations.

It's rarely made a difference in the past but there's a lack of diversity argument to be made that could give the edge to Hadestown (over everything except Be More Chill and Ain't Too Proud which don't seem that competitive) during the voting period.
