In the depths of the Rhine, the three Rhine maidens guard the gold. Alberich, the Lord of the Nibelung who tries in vain to win one of the three girls to sees the gold and first learns that to rob the gold only on the love abschwörte be, and secondly, that a ring forged from this gold would give immense power to the institution.
