The crowd-forming exhibition for Alexandra Pacula opened last Thursday. With a line out the door, the opening night vibrated with enthusiasts.
EVANESCENT GLOW (pictured) appears to be a favorite. Artists and collectors alike are studying Pacula's technique. Here we will explore one aspect of fascination by taking a closer look:
The detail on the left reveals how Pacula balances areas built from many thin glazes of yellow & Red hue (the lights) with contrasting passages of dark viscous paint (the rooftops). The aforementioned thick square shapes readily reflect light off the ridges of the brush strokes (they appear slightly grey in the photo). The ensuing reflection creates its own movement as the viewer changes position, adding depth and intrigue to darker areas. It begs the viewer to approach and explore all the little worlds in this big painting.
