BWW Review: 4,000 MILES at New Mexico Actors Lab
by Zoe Burke - August 20, 2019
The 2019 New Mexico Actors Lab season has been a very strong one, and the trend continues with their final production, 4,000 Miles. Amy Herzog's 2013 Pulitzer finalist is about, in large part, the relationship between 21 year old Leo and his 91 year old grandmother, dealing with themes of family, loss, responsibility, and love in a lovely, intimately staged fashion.

BWW Review: MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT at Rodey Theater, UNM
by Jackie Camborde - August 01, 2019
I don't know about you, but I rarely go to a musical in a bad mood. But I was in a bit of a bad mood when I arrived for the Sunday matinee of Spamalot this weekend - my kids were bickering, my husband was trying to manage my driving on the way to Albuquerque, I was exhausted from my week at my real job - so what a delight to sit down at the lovely Rodey Theater and have a completely fun and frothy afternoon with Landmark Musicals' production of Spamalot.
BWW Review: NSFW at Santa Fe Playhouse
by Jackie Camborde - August 01, 2019
Ever get to the theater, expecting to laugh, cry, think and be moved? This is not one of those times. I would like to say that NSFW at the Santa Fe Playhouse ran that gamut of emotions for me, but I would be lying. That's not to say that it didn't have its moments, it's just that there weren't enough of those moments to make for a cohesive and compelling evening at the theater.

Dan Ware, Tim Crofton, Lew Hauser of SHAKESPEARE IN HOLLYWOOD at Adobe Theatre
by Beth Leitman - July 30, 2019
According to the director and members of the cast of Adobe Theatre's production of Shakespeare in Hollywood, it has been a labor of love bringing the show to the stage; a wonderful experience where the cast had a great time getting to know one another and become friends, as well as a chance for the audience to leave the theatre with a more interest in Shakespeare and the history surrounding the 1935 movie of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
BWW Review: THE THIRTEENTH CHILD at Santa Fe Opera
by Maria Nockin - July 28, 2019
On July 27, 2019, Santa Fe Opera added a new work to the operatic canon with its world premiere of THE THIRTEENTH CHILD by Danish composer Poul Ruders and American librettists Becky and David Starobin. The production was  co-commissioned and co-produced by Santa Fe Opera and the Odense Symphony Orchestra.
BWW Review: COSI FAN TUTTE at Santa Fe Opera
by Maria Nockin - July 27, 2019
On July 26, 2019, Santa Fe Opera presented R. B. Schlather's rambunctious production of W. A. Mozart's dramma giocoso Così fan tutte. His first act started with Don Alfonso as a cowboy and the two couples, Fiordiligi with Gugliemo and Dorabella with  Ferrando dressed in tennis whites. Amanda Majeski, who has sung several leading roles at Santa Fe,  showed herself to be a capable Fiordiligi whose top notes bloomed with silver magic as she romped around the stage. For a?oeCome Scoglioa?? (a?oeLike a rocka??), she was comedically impassive and for a?oePer pietàa?? (a?oeFor pitya??) she truly begged for forgiveness as she used every note in her wide range to encompass the  scope of Mozart's writing.  whose top notes bloomed with silver magic as she romped around the stage.

BWW Review: NEWSIES at Musical Theatre Southwest
by Beth Leitman - July 17, 2019
Based on the cult classic movie of 1992 starring Christian Bale, David Moscow, and Bill Pullman, Newsies tells the 'David vs. Goliath' story of the newsboys of New York rising up to fight newspaper publishers in an attempt to secure rights for themselves. Newsies is also inspired by the real-life Newsboy strike of 1899, when Kid Blink led a group of newsies on a two-week-long strike against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other newspaper publishers. The musical shines a light on the exploitative labor practices and social injustices as a group of young kids try to fight against the powerful and corrupt businessmen of New York.

BWW Review: STOP KISS at New Mexico Actors Lab
by Zoe Burke - July 16, 2019
A review of the original 1998 production of Diana Son's Stop Kiss refers to the play as a 'small treasure' - not intended as a slight, but I think in reference to the beautifully, movingly simple nature of the script. I would use the same phrase to describe the New Mexico Actor's Lab production (currently running at Teatro Paraguas) - the play is full of small, gorgeous moments that are masterfully directed and acted, creating a lovely and impactful evening of theatre.
