Uptown Players has your weekend evenings planned as they present Broadway Our Way.  BWOW is the Players' annual fundraiser that gender-bends the typical Broadway numbers and allows some of Dallas' finest actors and actresses to play the dream roles they'd never land in a heteronormative casting call.  As it is their 16th year producing this fundraiser, Craig Lynch and Jeff Rane have certainly cultivated an incredible pool of talent. Lilly Winwood to Open for Steve Winwood at the Lyric
by BWW News Desk - Mar 17, 2017

In 2015, Lilly Winwood needed a vacation. The countryside of her native Gloucestershire, England felt too familiar, and London was, in her own words, 'so big, so expensive, and reeked of havoc and loss and all that good stuff.' So Winwood hopped on a plane to Nashville, where she'd spent childhood summers visiting her mother's family. (more...)

BWW Review: Appalachian Agincourt, Hillbilly HENRY V from Cohesion
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Mar 13, 2017

We get an early hint that this Henry has more bloodthirst and realpolitik about him than Shakespeare had in mind, when (without any sanction in the script) he shoves aside a squeamish executioner and personally participates in the execution of the three traitors suborned to murder him at Southampton. (more...)

BWW Review: STAGES St. Louis's Highly Entertaining JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
by Chris Gibson - Jun 9, 2017

I've seen several stagings of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT over the years, and I've always enjoyed the Tim Rice (book and lyrics) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) show each time. However, STAGES St. Louis has really outdone themselves with their latest production of this exuberant musical. The piece has always lent itself to approaching it with a great deal of imagination and creativity, since it's chock-full of hilarious, anachronistic humor and song, and this production takes full advantage of that fact. This show is a real treat, with strong performances and plenty of fun to go around, and I highly recommend it! (more...)

BWW Review: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, Churchill Theatre, Bromley
by Vikki Jane Vile - Jun 7, 2017

This take on the Hollywood classic Thoroughly Modern Millie last played Broadway back in 2002. However, regardless of the casts plucky efforts to inject some New York panache to proceedings, 'Millie' emerges as a particularly poor choice for revisiting in 2017. The story features threads that sit uncomfortably in the present day. Mrs Meers with her chopstick clad hair and mock Chinese accent is amusing for ten minutes but after a couple of scenes just seems plain racist. Millie's chunk of the plot hangs on the idea that she needs to find a rich man to marry to get on in life. Where do I even start with that one? (more...)

BWW Review: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, New Alexandra Theatre
by Emma Cann - Feb 15, 2017

It's 1922, and young Millie Dillmount arrives in New York from a small town in Kansas, ready to take control of her destiny and make her fortune by marrying well. After all, the modern marriage is a business affair. Skirts get shorter, heels get higher and hair is bobbed flapper style, making Millie the most up to date "modern" the Big Apple has to offer. However, Millie's plans to marry her boss and get rich quick are thrown awry by a surprise love affair and, rather implausibly, the discovery of a secret white slavery ring.  (more...)

by Michael Dale - Feb 12, 2017

BWW Review: UCF's OKLAHOMA! was more than just OK
by Libby Champion - Apr 9, 2017

'Oooook-lahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain...' Fun fact- that's the first thing that pops into my head whenever I think about the musical, OKLAHOMA. But, with it's versatile musical scale and it's bold and meaningful storyline, OKLAHOMA is so much more than the story of good ol' country cowboys and farmers trying to get along and the making of a new American state. It's a story of the triumphs and struggles for women in early American life and the conflicts that a local rivalry can bring, all wrapped up in a beautiful love story.   (more...)
