BWW Review: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS at Oyster Mill Playhouse
by Allison Rambler - Sep 25, 2017

In this day and age, musicals have transcended the limits of what they are expected to be. Shows such as DEAR EVAN HANSEN, THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, and HAMILTON break the traditional mold of Golden Age musicals with significant innovation that paves that way for even more creativity in this ever-evolving field. However, these new advancements should by no means overshadow the classics; rousing ensemble numbers and sweeping ballads will always have a special place in the hearts of many a theatre fanatic. These well-known and well-loved tropes of the standards of musical theatre are exactly what Oyster Mill Playhouse brings to life in their latest production of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. The show is filled with mishaps and mayhem galore, and reminds the audience of the sheer entertainment that musicals have the power to provide. (more...)

BWW Review: Triumphant AIDA Cast Slogs Through Tedious Sir Elton Score
by Perry Tannenbaum - Sep 14, 2017

Lilly Winwood to Open for Steve Winwood at the Lyric
by BWW News Desk - Mar 17, 2017

In 2015, Lilly Winwood needed a vacation. The countryside of her native Gloucestershire, England felt too familiar, and London was, in her own words, 'so big, so expensive, and reeked of havoc and loss and all that good stuff.' BWW Review: STAGES St. Louis's Highly Entertaining JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
by Chris Gibson - Jun 9, 2017

I've seen several stagings of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT over the years, and I've always enjoyed the Tim Rice (book and lyrics) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) show each time. However, STAGES St. Louis has really outdone themselves with their latest production of this exuberant musical. The piece has always lent itself to approaching it with a great deal of imagination and creativity, since it's chock-full of hilarious, anachronistic humor and song, and this production takes full advantage of that fact. This show is a real treat, with strong performances and plenty of fun to go around, and I highly recommend it! (more...)

BWW Review: THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, Churchill Theatre, Bromley
by Vikki Jane Vile - Jun 7, 2017

This take on the Hollywood classic Thoroughly Modern Millie last played Broadway back in 2002. However, regardless of the casts plucky efforts to inject some New York panache to proceedings, 'Millie' emerges as a particularly poor choice for revisiting in 2017. The story features threads that sit uncomfortably in the present day. Mrs Meers with her chopstick clad hair and mock Chinese accent is amusing for ten minutes but after a couple of scenes just seems plain racist. Millie's chunk of the plot hangs on the idea that she needs to find a rich man to marry to get on in life. Where do I even start with that one? (more...)

BWW Review: JOSEPH...DREAMCOAT at Sundance Summer Theater
by Blair Howell - Jul 28, 2017

Without a doubt, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is Utah's most frequently performed musical. It's hard not to find one of the ubiquitous stagings, from high schools to large community theater companies all across the state. So the challenge is to make JOSEPH fresh and new when audiences are already familiar with the sight gags and punchlines before entering the theater, if not also all the lyrics to each of the songs. (more...)

BWW Review: UCF's OKLAHOMA! was more than just OK
by Libby Champion - Apr 9, 2017

'Oooook-lahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain...' Fun fact- that's the first thing that pops into my head whenever I think about the musical, OKLAHOMA. But, with it's versatile musical scale and it's bold and meaningful storyline, OKLAHOMA is so much more than the story of good ol' country cowboys and farmers trying to get along and the making of a new American state. It's a story of the triumphs and struggles for women in early American life and the conflicts that a local rivalry can bring, all wrapped up in a beautiful love story.   (more...)
