BWW Review: Secret City Founder Chris Wells Debuts The Hilarious and Heartwarming Musical IT WILL ALL WORK OUT At Dixon Place
by Victoria Ordin - Apr 21, 2017

It's one of those great New York real estate stories that underscores what only a New Yorker understands: your entire life depends upon your apartment. Even if broke, a decent place in the right part of town is they key to everything. And broke he was, working odd jobs as house cleaner, landscaper, and law firm transcriptionist (or something equally tedious). But one day, after getting paid $150.00, he splurged on the 'full package' at a Korean massage parlor downtown. The scene, with Hwang on the accordion, is a microcosm of a show that through laughter, music, and sometimes tears, presents a brave yet gentle portrait of an artist. Like the show and his life, the massage has a happy ending, but not the one you expect. It's a long way from Lancaster to upstate New York which Wells shares with his soon-to-be husband. In these terrifying times, when even the tough are rattled by the news, Wells and the outstanding ensemble of IT WILL ALL WORK OUT reminds us that things sometimes do. (more...)

BWW Review: Talented Cast Sails into SOUTH PACIFIC at Jewel Box Theatre
by Robert Barossi - Apr 16, 2017

Rodgers and Hammerstein shows are known for being of a certain type. They are rarely what might be called small or minimalist and it would be tricky for any theater to do minimalist versions of most of them. These are shows that often have the word “big” attached to them and for a smaller sized theater with somewhat  limited resources to attempt one of these big shows is an ambitious effort. Jewel Box Theatre is currently trying to do just that with a fully staged production of one of these shows, South Pacific, and the attempt ends up with highly mixed results. (more...)

BWW Review: THE PRODUCERS at Pollard Theatre Company is Not to be Missed
by Robert Barossi - Apr 16, 2017

It's never a good idea to say that anything is a sure thing. On the other hand, when the creative team behind the Broadway smash The Producers put the show together, it must have seemed just a little bit like it could be a sure thing. You had the comic genius of Mel Brooks creating a musical based on his own hysterical movie, with the help of other Broadway heavy hitters like Susan Stroman, who directed and choreographed the original production, as well as major stars like Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The show went on to become one of the biggest hits in modern  Broadway memory and the current production at the Pollard Theatre loses none of what made the original such an enormous success. BWW Review: BROADWAY BY THE YEAR Illuminates the Timeless Relationship Between Art and Culture, Paying Tribute to the 1940s
by Casey Mink - Apr 13, 2017

At the most recent BROADWAY BY THE YEAR presentation on March 27, at its usual home of the Town Hall, the 1940s was the sent-up decade from which the evening's performers sang. At a time in the country that currently bears striking and cryptic similarity to that grim period of global history, the resonance of the evening's selections rang eerily. Additionally, they also demonstrated how little the relationship between culture and society has changed over the last seven decades. (more...)
