New programs for Lincoln Center Local HD, a pilot program running April through June in branch libraries in Brooklyn and Queens, were announced today by Russell Granet, Executive Director of Lincoln Center Education. These events, which launched in January, are part of the two-year pilot program that will feature digital streams of programs from Lincoln Center's growing digital content collection, including programs from the Emmy Award-winning series Live From Lincoln Center. The Lincoln Center Local HD pilot program is part of Lincoln Center Education's (LCE) expanded mission to bring Lincoln Center's high-quality resources to new and underserved audiences and communities. Berkeley Repertory Theatre announces the world premiere of The House that will not Stand, a historical comedic drama commissioned from award-winning poet-playwright and Oakland native Marcus Gardley. Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting - The House that will not Stand unearths a story about free women of color in 1836 New Orleans, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with affluent white men. When her wealthy lover mysteriously dies, Beartrice Albans' foundation of security hangs precariously by a thread. She is left to fend for her three unwed daughters in a world where freedom must be carefully negotiated. Told in a rich and lyrical river of words, this new play was developed through The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. It's helmed by Patricia McGregor, whose many credits include the celebrated production of Spunk at California Shakespeare Theater. The House that will not Stand begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage today, January 31, opens on Wednesday, February 5 and runs through Sunday, March 16, 2014. (more...)

On the nights of Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22, theatre-goers will experience the mind-bending fantasy and unique musical experience of THE LEGEND OF YAUNA, an incredible tale created by the Grammy award-winning composer/music director Chris Berry and staged by director/choreographer Maija Garcia, the powerhouse behind the Tony award-winning Broadway production Fela!. This theatrical music and dance experience shares the wisdom of Yauna, an ancient narrative set 12,000 years ago that spotlights the indigenous Bana Kuma ceremonies of Zimbabwe. Helmed by the pen and voice of the talented Berry, the eclectic cast includes: Afro-European vocalist Marie Daulne (founder of the internationally acclaimed quintet Zap Mama) playing the role of 'Black Panther Queen'; seven musicians performing on non-traditional instrumentation including African drums and the shona Mbira; and a diverse nine-member theatrical ensemble that brings the storybook to life through music, song and high-powered contemporary dance. During the chaotic days of World War II in Naples, an enterprising woman sets up a small-time black market business in the middle of her home to keep her family afloat. She prospers, but maybe a bit too much-compelling her husband to ask hard questions about morality, civility, and the state of their society. In a war-torn culture in which coffee is like liquid gold, De Filippo's masterful blend of humor and pathos tells the story of an unforgettable and wildly entertaining family determined to make a living even if it means profiteering. These events, which launched in January, are part of the two-year pilot program that will feature digital streams of programs from Lincoln Center's growing digital content collection, including programs from the Emmy Award-winning series Live From Lincoln Center. The Apollo Theater and World Music Institute present AFRICA NOW, a four-day music festival spotlighting today's African music scene. The second annual festival will feature a powerful lineup of artists who have drawn upon their roots for inspiration - and transplanted them onto the global music landscape. Africa Now will be anchored by a blow-out concert, April 5th, on the legendary Apollo stage featuring: Malian songstress Fatoumata Diawara; Senegalese trio Les Freres Guisse; and reggae/Afrobeat collective Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars.
