Broadway World speaks to Lee Latchford Evans ahead of his performance at the Edinburgh Fringe in Eurobeat!

Tell us a bit about Eurobeat

Eurobeat is a spoof celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest set in Moldova, a country that quite obviously is hosting the glamorous show on a shoestring budget. Ten countries will entertain us through music and it will be up to the audience to pick the winner, with live voting at every performance.

Why did you decide to get involved with Eurobeat?

I was taken in by the high standard of production for the music. Yes, it's a comedy and it's going to be lots of fun, but when I heard the backing tracks I was really surprised. These songs could actually be in Eurovision. On top of that I have been out of action for over a year after having back surgery and when I read the part for Niko Nikovsky I knew it was something that would take me a little out of my comfort zone, but I could really get my teeth into. It's going to be a fab show and I think the Edinburgh audience are going to love it.

Have you been to the Edinburgh Fringe before and do you think you know what to expect?

Yes I performed in the musical Wolfboy a few years ago now, which had rave reviews, but it was a psycho sexual thriller. Eurobeat is fun, high-energy and poptastically camp, which is going to liven up the audience and give everyone a great time. I'm hoping Edinburgh will embrace it with open arms.

Who would you recommend comes to see Eurobeat?

Honestly, I would say if you like Eurovision and enjoy the witty stylings of Graham Norton, good pop music and a show that doesn't take itself too seriously then this is for you. Obviously if you are a Steps fan then of course you're gonna love it.

And you've released a single?

Yes, the single "My People know how to Party" is now available on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. It's a fun, upbeat track and is the character Niko's new hit single that he keeps trying to promote during the musical.

I think this track totally embodies what you will get from the show. It was great being back in the studio recording again - even though I was being the character Niko, it was made easier by a fantastically talented production team.

Timings and ticket information for Eurobeat can be found on the edfringe website.
