The Bakewell Bake Off is a contest taking place the town of Bakewell. While the contestants are originally told they will be judged on their signature bake, they are told there is a surprise second round to decide on the official recipe for the town's Bakewell tart.

Among the contestants are a chemist, a German transvestite, a postman and a nun. The contestants are introduced with their own musical number which tells us a bit about their background. The songs are decent and they don't outstay their welcome. The whole script is rife with innuendo (which my companion tells me is a trademark of The Great British Bake Off) and there are fantastic puns throughout.

The Bakewell Bake Off suffered from some serious lighting issues during this performance. There seemed to be some kind of fault and the lights cut out completely- but the cast were seriously impressive. Leading lady Victoria Sponge made a quick joke about needing a shilling for the meter and then they didn't miss a beat in carrying on with the show despite the darkness.

The performers didn't have microphones and at times the music was a little louder than the vocals. All the performers were very talented and it was a shame that some were drowned out in places.

The first few performances of The Bakewell Bake Off have sold out and I suspect a lot of hype will be building around this show. It's a lovely musical and a really fun way to spend an afternoon.
