The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® celebration of excellence in the theatre includes recognition of winners and nominees in the 27 competitive categories. The Tony Awards® administrative committee also celebated the honorees for the four non-competitive categories which were presented at the 2009 Tony Awards Sunday, June 7th. Stage and film actress Anne Hathaway made an appearance in Springfield as Princess Penelope, a new sidekick to Krusty the Clown, on Fox's 'The Simpsons'. In the episode, titled 'Once Upon a Time in Springfield', Hathaway sings 'A Princess Knows,' 'Glitter and Sparkle' and 'Watered with Love'; she also sings a brief part of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's classic 'Moon River.' Today, Cutting Edge Composers is thankful for its talented composers, especially Will Reynolds. His song 'I Knew a Boy' was sung by Spring Awakening's Blake Daniel at their concert at the Canal Room. When asked about his inspiration for writing this song, Will said 'The first lyric is 'We sneak by disaster-free courting catastrophe' which basically sums up my experience as a 20-something. 'I Knew a Boy' was a warning to myself when I realized I had let myself get a little too lost.' (more...)

Funny girl, singular talent, American icon. Fanny Brice hit stardom in the 1920s and, almost a century later, still inspires the public imagination. On May 3, 4, and 5, Lyrics & Lyricists pays tribute to Fanny with Ziegfeld Girl: The Many Faces of Fanny Brice, a night of songs she put on the Broadway map, led by artistic director Ted Sperling, music director of the smash 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific. Vocalists Capathia Jenkins, Leslie Kritzer, Faith Prince and Clarke Thorell sing classics like 'Second Hand Rose' and 'My Man'-as well as songs she inspired in Funny Girl.

This week's spotlight is on Joel Waggoner and Eric Price, whose new original musical PRESTO CHANGE-O is commissioned by Barrington Stage and directed by Marc Bruni (Beautiful). It tells the story of a family of stage magicians who find themselves living under the same roof for the first time in years. In this song, Tina, who is the family's maid and maintains their ever-growing collection of artifacts from the history of magic, reveals her larger ambitions.
