BWW Reviews: Theatreworks' PSYCHO BEACH PARTY Flounders in the Water
by Christi Esterle (Denver)
(10/24/2014) - You'd think a play called Psycho Beach Party would be a little more, well....crazy. But Charles Busch's affectionate parody of 1960s beach movies seldom seems more unhinged than the cheerful teen romps it draws inspiration from. Oh, it's not all sun and fun in the sand, to be sure. There's a fair amount of sexual kink, a domineering mother who could give Margaret White a run for her money, and revelations of a tragic past, but it all feels so light. The poster for the Theatreworks production, featuring a knife-wielding beach bunny, promises a gruesome good time that the play never really delivers.

BWW Reviews: Chekov Becomes Hilarious in ACT's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE
by Jay Irwin (Seattle)
(10/24/2014) - Sometimes a fun night is just a dead lock. Such is the case when you take three of Seattle's most gifted and seasoned actors and put them in the off kilter world of a Christopher Durang play as has happed over at ACT with their current production of "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike". I have to admit going in I had very little doubt that I would have a good time with all those elements combined and I was not disappointed. But beyond the sure thing of comedy that resulted what also emerged was a truly thoughtful and resonant look at some ways society has been brought down as it's built up.

BWW Review: BIRDMAN Is a Remarkable Fever Dream, Worthy of Both Stage and Screen
by Matt Tamanini
(10/24/2014) - Full disclosure, I like most everything that I see; be it on stage, on TV, or on film. I tend to appreciate the vision required to complete such a complicated project, the artistry to craft a new work, and the creativity to bring it to life. However, while I like the majority of shows and movies that I watch, I love very few. I wanted to preface my review with that because, simply put, I loved BIRDMAN. The experience of seeing this dark comedy is as close to the rush of seeing a Broadway show as any film that I can ever remember seeing, including those actually based on Broadway shows. BIRDMAN is an acting, directing, and cinematographing triumph that is sure to be rewarded throughout the upcoming awards season.

by BWW News Desk (New York City)
(10/24/2014) - St. Ann's Warehouse welcomes back Kneehigh Theatre and director Emma Rice for the New York Premiere of Tristan & Yseult, the acclaimed production that catapulted the Cornwall-based company onto the national stage. In her adaptation of the epic Cornish drama, Rice employs Kneehigh's signature blend of high theatrics-performances alternately poignant and comic, evocative spectacle, and gorgeous live music-to reimagine the tale of forbidden desires, broken hearts and the agony of choosing one love over another. Reviewing the production last year, The Guardian wrote, 'If this show doesn't make you fall in love with theatre, there's no potion on Earth that can help you.'

BWW Reviews: ON THE TOWN at Broadway's Lyric Theater Is a Delight from Start to Finish
by Sondra Forsyth (Dance - New York City)
(10/24/2014) - The most recent revival of "On the Town", the 1944 smash hit based on Jerome Robbins' "Fancy Free" ballet about three sailors on 24-hour shore leave in NYC, is first-rate on all counts. Right from the moment that the booming bass-baritone voice of Phillip Boykin joins the audience singing "The Star Spangled Banner" as he strolls down an aisle, the show captivates with professionalism and energy that are sustained throughout the evening.

BWW Reviews: Southwest Shakespeare's KING JOHN Is A Royal Treat
by Herbert Paine (Phoenix)
(10/24/2014) - It is the Throne that takes center stage in Jared Sakren's searing production of William Shakespeare's King John ~ and all the men and women in it merely players to its seductions and channels for the issues that try the souls of their time. It is Maren Maclean who supercharges the play with an electrifying performance as Constance, the aggrieved mother who demands that her son Arthur be given that which is rightfully his ~ that Throne. Southwest Shakespeare Company's production is blessed with a rich ensemble on a simple stage dramatically enhanced by Daniel Davisson's moody lighting.
