(7/25/2014) - The August broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin -- begin with Music Director Alan Gilbert conducting the New York Philharmonic in the opening program of The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, featuring the 2014-14 season Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman as soloist. Over the course of the three-week festival Mr. Bronfman performs the complete Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle as well as the Triple Concerto with Principal Cello Carter Brey and Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow in the final Philharmonic appearance of his 34-year tenure. The festival also features the World Premieres of Lyra by Anthony Cheung and Songs by Sean Shepherd, both commissioned by the New York Philharmonic as part of The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Prize for New Music, pairing the master composer's concertos with new commissions now entering the repertoire.

(7/25/2014) - A performance of Verdi's Requiem that is a tripartite collaboration highlights the 2014-15 season of Kent Tritle, called 'New York's reigning choral conductor' by The New York Times. In an event emblematic of Kent's multiple roles in the city's choral life, he will conduct a performance of the massive work by the Oratorio Society of New York, of which he is Music Director, and the Symphony and Symphonic Chorus of the Manhattan School of Music, where he is Director of Choral Activities, in the grand space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he is Director of Cathedral Music and Organist -- with a new choral configuration that features the more-than-250 singers on risers in the cathedral's Great Choir space.

(7/25/2014) - Local 802, American Federation of Musicians, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra musicians today have commenced negotiations with Met Opera management including General Manager Peter Gelb. The union and the musicians released the attached report detailing the failed management and flawed artistic vision of Gelb during his 8-year tenure at the helm of the Met. The report analyzes the dismal reception of Gelb's expensive new productions by opera critics and patrons and also recommends specific strategies the Met could employ to save $20 Million annually by curtailing Gelb's lavish spending and realizing scheduling efficiencies.
