Now Playing Onstage in Boise - Week of 2/24/2013 A NIGHTTIME SURVIVAL GUIDE
Boise Contemporary Theater
1/30-3/2/2013
Eleven-year-old Verne lives in Arco, Idaho, where the nights are getting longer. Half a world away, where more often than not it's already tomorrow, lives a girl named Aki. She hates her new home in rural Japan and he's terrified of what comes out when the sun goes down. They're united by a shared mystery and an unshared darkness. It's a fantastic adventure of friendship, hope and imagination set in two places where monsters just might exist. Appropriate for ages 6 and up.

2/26-3/2/2013
One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie; Based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford; Additional Music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman

Now Playing Onstage in Boise - Week of 2/24/2013 SWEENEY TODD
Lake City Playhouse
2/8-3/3/2013
The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. At the show's core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice Mrs. Lovett. Although it has been extremely popular with opera companies and in concert presentation, SWEENEY TODD is equally effective as an intimate chamber musical.

BABES IN ARMS (OPPENHEIMER VERSION)
Lewiston High School Drama
2/28-3/9/2013
This quintessential 'Hey, kids, let's put on a show!' musical boasts one of the greatest scores ever written. Set at a summer stock theatre, the plot concerns a group of young apprentices and their conviction to mount the original revue they've created while dodging the underhanded attempts of the surly theatre owner to squash their efforts at every turn. Further complications are provided by the overbearing stage mother of a beautiful ex-child star and the inflated ego of a hack southern playwright. But of course the show must go on, and so it does in a resolution of comeuppance, reconciliation and romance. This version is the 1959 adaptation by George Oppenheimer. The Original 1937 version is also available. Please specify which version you would like when ordering. Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Lorenz Hart; Book by George Oppenheimer; Based on the original by Rodgers & Hart
