Highlights this week include an Independence Day performance from ON THE TOWN, the first concert in the BROADWAY IN BRYANT PARK series, the 11,000th performance of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and more!
BroadwayWorld was able to celebrate the 4th of July with the cast of the upcoming revival of ON THE TOWN, opening this October at Broadway's Lyric Theatre. Tony Award winner Lea Salonga visited Disney's ALADDIN this past week. She also voice Mulan in both "Mulan" and "Mulan II." Click here to see more coverage of her recent visit to the New Amsterdam Theatre!
Broadway's longest-running show THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA made history this past Monday as the production celebrated its 11,000th performance! No other Broadway show to date has achieved this honor. This Andrew Lloyd Webber classic opened in the West End in 1986, subsequently opening in New York two years later. The production has been performing eight shows a week ever since. This week, rehearsal shots of FINDING NEVERLAND, a new musical based on the film of the same name, were released. The show begins previews at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge on July 23rd under the direction of Tony winner Diane Paulus. The A.R.T. has contributed significantly to the past several Broadway theatre seasons, transferring shows such as "Pippin," "Porgy and Bess," and "All the Way." The hit off-Broadway spectacle FUERZA BRUTA is back at the Daryl Roth Theatre, this time with an extra twenty minutes of thrilling action and incredible performances, complete with live music for the first time in the production's history! The unveiling of Tony Award winner Alam Cumming's caricature took place earlier this week at the famed Sardis restaurant. This Thursday was the first of the summer's annual BROADWAY IN BRYANT PARK concerts. Six free concerts are performed each year, and 2014 marks the 14th consecutive year of this special event.
