DanceWorks Welcomes Wen Wei Dance's 7th SENSE Premiere, 3/1-2

DanceWorks, Toronto's longest-running contemporary dance series, proudly presents the Toronto premiere of 7th Sense, from Vancouver's acclaimed Wen Wei Dance, choreographed by Artistic Director Wen Wei Wang, for two nights only - tonight, March 1 to Saturday, March 2 - at Fleck Dance Theatre, part of Harbourfront Centre's NextSteps.

7th Sense is a new dance creation for six dancers and a much-anticipated follow-up to Wen Wei Wang's Dora Mavor Moore-nominated work Cock-Pit, presented by DanceWorks in 2010.

7th Sense explores how we wield control and succumb to it; an invisible force that shapes our lives and our relationships. This full-length work holds a mirror up to humanity: We cherish the autonomy of our lives, the free will we exercise in our daily existence. And we valiantly struggle against oppressive forces, on scales large and small. Yet humans have a deep-rooted duplicitous urge to dominate our surroundings, conquer the unknown, and to master the mysterious.

7th Sense is a personal exploration into the realization of one's true nature, despite the many external societal forces that constrain and inhibit. 7th Sense is about pushing back against the artificial rules of society that prevent us from giving way to our true selves and from loving - others and ourselves - unconditionally.

Wen Wei Dance fuses precise choreography with stunning visual design and music, creating startling and provocative performances of a distinctive trans-cultural sensibility. The company has performed its acclaimed works across Canada and at dance festivals around the world, including China, where Wen Wei Wang was born and raised.

Wen Wei Wang began dancing at an early age. He trained and danced professionally with the Langzhou Song and Dance Company, and in 1991 immigrated to Canada and joined the Judith Marcuse Dance Company, then Ballet British Columbia. Since 2003 he has been artistic director of Wen Wei Dance. He has received many awards, including the 2000 Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award and the 2006 Isadora Award for Excellence in Choreography (Unbound). He has choreographed for the Alberta Ballet, Ballet BC, Ballet Jörgen, North West Dance Projects, the Vancouver and San Francisco Operas, and most recently Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (BJM).

The Toronto premiere of 7th Sense follows directly on the heels of its debut February 22-23, in Edmonton. After Toronto, it heads to Montreal March 20-23 for L'Agora de la Danse. 7th Sense is a co-production of The CanDance Network Creation Fund, DanceHouse, Brian Webb Dance Company, National Arts Centre, L'Agora de la danse and supported by Dance Section of the Canada Council for the Arts.
