Lors d'une cérémonie au London Palladium animée par Gina et Mazz Murray, les lauréats de la 26e édition des WhatsOnStage Awards en association avec AudienceView ont été annoncés — les seules grandes distinctions théâtrales britanniques décidées par les spectateurs eux-mêmes.
Darius Thompson et Alex Wood de WhatsOnStage ont déclaré aujourd'hui : "Les votants ont vraiment pris soin de cet ours ! Le record de récompenses remportées par Paddington a démontré qu'il s'est fermement établi comme le nouveau spectacle favori du public dans le West End. Des ours aux balcons – il n'est pas surprenant de voir Rachel Zegler parmi la prestigieuse liste des gagnants, suite à sa performance en plein air dans ce lieu même l'été dernier."
Le succès critique Paddington The Musical a triomphé en remportant neuf distinctions, égalant le record du plus grand nombre de récompenses dans l'histoire des WhatsOnStage Awards aux côtés de Harry Potter and the Cursed Child et Miss Saigon — et le plus grand nombre pour tout nouveau musical. La production a remporté le prix du Meilleur Nouveau Musical; Meilleure Première Performance Professionnelle pour Timi Akinyosade; Meilleure Mise en Scène pour Luke Sheppard; Meilleure Scénographie pour Tom Pye; Meilleurs Costumes pour Gabriella Slade et Tahra Zafar — cette dernière ayant conçu l'ours; Meilleur Design Sonore pour Gareth Owen; Meilleure Conception des Perruques, Coiffures et Maquillages pour Campbell Young Associates; Meilleure Supervision/Direction Musicale pour Matt Brind; et Meilleur Casting pour Natalie Gallacher CDG pour Pippa Ailion et Natalie Gallacher Casting, Nick Hockaday et Annabelle Davis.
Evita a reçu cinq récompenses – Meilleur Revival Musical, Meilleure Chorégraphie pour Fabian Aloise, Meilleures Lumières pour Jon Clark, Meilleur Design Vidéo pour Jamie Lloyd, Nick Ward et David Anderson, et Rachel Zegler remportant le titre de Meilleure Interprète dans un Musical. Zegler a également gagné le Meilleur Événement Concert pour Rachel Zegler: Live at The London Palladium.
Avec une année largement dominée par les grands musicals, Richard II au Bridge Theatre mène la catégorie des pièces de théâtre avec deux récompenses - Jonathan Bailey remporte Meilleur Interprète dans une Pièce et la production, Meilleur Revival d'une Pièce. Remportant le prix de la Meilleure Nouvelle Pièce est la comédie préférée des Awards de WhatsOnStage, The Comedy About Spies de Henry Lewis et Henry Shields.
Complétant les catégories de performances, Amber Davies remporte Meilleur Second Rôle dans un Musical, remportant la seule victoire pour The Great Gatsby; Stephen Fry remportant Meilleur Second Rôle dans une Pièce pour The Importance of Being Earnest, encore une fois la seule victoire pour cette production multi-nominée; et Emma Kingston prend le Meilleur Remplacement pour Elphaba dans Wicked.
Pour couronner ses 40 ans, Les Misérables, le musical ayant la plus longue durée dans le West End, remporte le prestigieux prix du Meilleur Spectacle du West End. Meilleure Production Régionale va à 13 Going on 30 The Musical à l'Opera House de Manchester; avec la production du Hope Mill de Young Frankenstein remportant Meilleure Production en Studio.
