En una ceremonia en el London Palladium con Gina y Mazz Murray como anfitriones, se anunciaron los ganadores de la vigésima sexta edición de los premios anuales WhatsOnStage en asociación con AudienceView — los únicos premios teatrales importantes del Reino Unido decididos por los propios espectadores.
Darius Thompson y Alex Wood de WhatsOnStage dijeron hoy: "¡Los votantes cuidaron mucho de ese oso! La increíble cantidad de premios ganados por Paddington ha cimentado firmemente su lugar como un nuevo favorito entre los fanáticos del West End. El aclamado musical Paddington The Musical triunfó, ganando nueve premios e igualando el récord de más premios en la historia de los premios WhatsOnStage, junto a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child y Miss Saigon — y el mayor número para cualquier nuevo musical. La producción ganó Mejor Nuevo Musical; Mejor Desempeño en Debut Profesional para Timi Akinyosade; Mejor Dirección para Luke Sheppard; Mejor Diseño de Escenografía para Tom Pye; Mejor Diseño de Vestuario para Gabriella Slade y Tahra Zafar — esta última, quien diseñó el oso; Mejor Diseño de Sonido para Gareth Owen; Mejor Diseño de Pelucas, Cabello y Maquillaje para Campbell Young Associates; Mejor Supervisión/Dirección Musical para Matt Brind; y Mejor Dirección de Reparto para Natalie Gallacher CDG para Pippa Ailion y Natalie Gallacher Casting, Nick Hockaday y Annabelle Davis.
Evita fue galardonada con cinco premios – Mejor Revival de Musical, Mejor Coreografía para Fabian Aloise, Mejor Iluminación para Jon Clark, Mejor Diseño de Video para Jamie Lloyd, Nick Ward y David Anderson, y Rachel Zegler ganando como Mejor Intérprete en un Musical. Zegler también ganó el premio al Mejor Evento de Concierto por Rachel Zegler: Live at The London Palladium.
Con un año dominado por los grandes musicales, Richard II en el Bridge Theatre lidera las categorías de obra con dos premios - Jonathan Bailey ganó Mejor Intérprete en una Obra y la producción, Mejor Revival de Obra. El premio a la Mejor Nueva Obra fue para los favoritos de los premios WhatsOnStage, Mischief, por The Comedy About Spies de Henry Lewis y Henry Shields.
Completando las categorías de actuación, Amber Davies ganó Mejor Intérprete de Reparto en un Musical, obteniendo el único premio para The Great Gatsby; Stephen Fry ganó como Mejor Intérprete de Reparto en una Obra por La Importancia de Llamarse Ernesto, de nuevo, el único premio para la producción multi-nominada; y Emma Kingston obtuvo el premio a Mejor Reemplazo por Elphaba en Wicked.
Celebrando su 40º año, Los Miserables, el musical de mayor duración en el West End, ganó el codiciado premio a Mejor Show del West End.
