Tijdens een ceremonie in The London Palladium, gepresenteerd door Gina en Mazz Murray, werden de winnaars van de 26e jaarlijkse WhatsOnStage Awards in samenwerking met AudienceView aangekondigd—de enige grote Britse theaterprijs die wordt bepaald door de theaterbezoekers zelf.
WhatsOnStage's Darius Thompson en Alex Wood zeiden vandaag, "De stemmers hebben echt voor die beer gezorgd! Paddingtons recordbrekende aantal awards heeft het stevig gevestigd als een nieuwe favoriet bij het publiek in West End. Van beren tot balkons—het is geen verrassing om Rachel Zegler te zien tussen de sterrenrijke line-up van winnaars, na haar al fresco optreden op deze locatie afgelopen zomer."
Het kritisch geprezen succesnummer Paddington The Musical triomfeerde met negen awards en evenaarde daarmee het record voor de meeste overwinningen in de geschiedenis van de WhatsOnStage Awards, samen met Harry Potter and the Cursed Child en Miss Saigon — en het meest voor een nieuwe musical. De productie won Beste Nieuwe Musical; Beste Professionele Debuutoptreden voor Timi Akinyosade; Beste Regie voor Luke Sheppard; Beste Decorontwerp voor Tom Pye; Beste Kostuumontwerp voor Gabriella Slade en Tahra Zafar—de laatste, die de beer ontwierp; Beste Geluidsontwerp voor Gareth Owen; Beste Wigs, Haar en Make-up Ontwerp voor Campbell Young Associates; Beste Muzikale Supervisie/Regie voor Matt Brind; en Beste Casting Regie voor Natalie Gallacher CDG voor Pippa Ailion en Natalie Gallacher Casting, Nick Hockaday en Annabelle Davis.
Evita ontving vijf Awards – Beste Herleving Musical, Beste Choreografie voor Fabian Aloise, Beste Belichting voor Jon Clark, Beste Videoontwerp voor Jamie Lloyd, Nick Ward en David Anderson, en Rachel Zegler won Beste Performer in een Musical. Zegler won ook de Beste Concertevenement voor Rachel Zegler: Live at The London Palladium.
Met een jaar dat vooral werd gedomineerd door de grote musicals, leidt Richard II in Bridge Theatre de categorieën voor toneelstukken met twee overwinningen - Jonathan Bailey wint Beste Performer in een Tonelstuk en de productie, Beste Herleving Toneelstuk. De award voor Beste Nieuw Toneelstuk gaat naar de WhatsOnStage Award favorieten Mischief voor The Comedy About Spies van Henry Lewis en Henry Shields.
De prestatierubrieken worden vervolledigd met Amber Davies die Beste Ondersteunende Performer in een Musical wint, de enige overwinning voor The Great Gatsby; Stephen Fry die Beste Ondersteunende Performer in een Tonelstuk wint voor The Importance of Being Earnest, opnieuw de enige overwinning voor de veelgenomineerde productie; en Emma Kingston die Beste Overname wint voor Elphaba in Wicked.
Ter gelegenheid van zijn 40e jaar wint Les Misérables, de langstlopende musical in West End, de felbegeerde Beste West End Show Award. Beste Regionale Productie gaat naar 13 Going on 30 The Musical in het Opera House in Manchester; met de productie van Young Frankenstein van Hope Mill die Beste Studio Productie wint.
