Review: HELL’S KITCHEN at Belk Theater
by Vickie Evans - Sep 22, 2026
At its heart, Hell’s Kitchen is not simply a musical based on the life of the incomparable, Alicia Keys, it is a coming-of-age, autobiographical-inspired story that explores the complexities of single parenting, generational differences, and a young woman’s determination to discover her own identity.

Review: FLIP at Charlotte Ballet
by Perry Tannenbaum - Jul 7, 2026
Funkier and more humbly budgeted than Charlotte Ballet's extravaganzas at larger venues, FLIP at the McBride Bonnefoux provided a different kind of adventure, substituted promise for polish, and dug deeper into the company's soul.

Review: THE NOTEBOOK THE MUSICAL at Belk Theater
by Perry Tannenbaum - May 22, 2026
THE NOTEBOOK The Musical was a charming chamber piece when I first read Bekah Brunstetter's adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' breakout bestseller. But the touring version is now playing to bigger houses than either its original Chicago premiere or its New York engagement. With Broadway-extravaganza pretensions. Call me back when a local company decides to mount this musical at an appropriate scale.

Review: SUFFS at Blumenthal Performing Arts
by Perry Tannenbaum - Mar 14, 2026
We are gloriously entertained and usefully educated by SUFFS, with a score from Shaina Taub that outshines HAMILTON, but perhaps we should also be more challenged.
