Hat Jesus wirklich gelebt? Darüber streitet Redaktor Berlioz mit dem aufstrebenden Autor Besdomny. Kurz danach rollt Berlioz' Kopf über Moskaus Strassen. Denn der Teufel persönlich hat sich eingemischt. Als Professor für schwarze Magie nistet er sich in Berlioz' Wohnung ein und krempelt Moral, Machtverhältnisse und die Realität um. Nur Margarita und ihr Geliebter, der ‹Meister›, gelangen in eine jenseitige, beinahe romantische Welt des Glücks.
Mit einem hyperrealistischen Bühnenbild des Bühnenbildstars Márton Ágh kehrt Martin Laberenz ans Theater Basel zurück.
