Syracuse Stage has announced casting for the world premiere of How to Dance in Ohio, a new musical inspired by Alexandra Shiva’s Peabody Award-winning documentary of the same name. Every so often in our lives along comes a musical full of heart. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, is a musical comedy with Music & Lyrics by William Finn, with a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The Broadway Production opened in 2005 and was directed by James Lapine. Since its opening, many productions both locally and regionally have been produced throughout the United States. Spelling Bee was nominated for 6 Tony Awards, winning two including Best Book. This fast-paced musical comedy features 6 adult performers playing children in a local annual spelling bee competing for the top prize, and a savings bond for furthering their education. At the judge’s table and moderator for the events of the bee are past spelling Champion Rona Lisa Peretti, who is also a local Real-Estate Agent, and Vice Principal Douglas Panch. The unique aspect of the show is that four audience members are invited on stage with the performers in the show to compete in the bee. The Announcer and Moderator switch off by ad-libbing mixed sentences and various definitions for the words often to hilarious ends. One by one the performers playing middle school-aged children take their turn at the mic and perform their unique form of spelling by talking into their hand, writing the word on the floor with their foot, or drawing the word on their arm all competing to make sure each word is spelled correctly.

Second Stage Theater has announced two new productions for its upcoming 2022-23 Season. Tony Award-nominee Bess Wohl will return to the Tony Kiser Theater (305 West 43rd Street) this Fall with the New York premiere of CAMP SIEGFRIED. Spring 2023 will see the Broadway premiere of Larissa FastHorse's THE THANKSGIVING PLAY,

Barrington Stage Company has announced casting for the first two shows of its 2022 season: the 1978 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Fats Waller Musical Show, and the world premiere play, Andy Warhol in Iran by Brent Askari (BSC’s American Underground) which opens the St. Germain Stage from June 2-25.

Julianne Boyd, Founder and Artistic Director of Barrington Stage Company, has announced plans to retire at the end of the 2022 season. The Board of Trustees is conducting a national search for her successor, who will assume leadership in the fall of 2022.  

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!

As announced on July 6, Barrington Stage Company was one of the first two theatres with Equity-approved plans to resume socially-distanced performance this summer. Now, according to the New York Times, BSC's Harry Clarke, which was set to begin performances indoors next week, will now perform outdoors in accordance with rules from the stage of Massachusetts which prohibit indoor theatre.
