The FREDDY Awards program is designed to recognize and reward exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theatre in local high schools. The 3-hour LIVE broadcast includes a stellar opening number, performance by nominated musicals, actors and actresses, and presentation of the 2023 FREDDY© Awards in 23 award categories. It is estimated that this program directly effects over 2,900 students in our area each year. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people experience the students' hard work and dedication to theater arts by enjoying the FREDDY© Awards Ceremony, which is broadcast live on WFMZ-TV.
The State Theatre's FREDDY Awards is the only high school musical awards program in the nation that produces a live television show. The telecast has received numerous broadcast awards, including Mid-Atlantic EMMYs in 2005, 2011, and 2019. The 2008 FREDDY© program was the subject of a feature-length film documentary, Most Valuable Players, by Canyon Back Films, Los Angeles. Released in 2010, the documentary is part of Oprah Winfrey Network's (OWN) documentary film club, which premiered in 2011.
29 schools in Northampton, Lehigh, and Warren Counties are participating in the 2023 FREDDY© program. View the complete list of schools, shows, and times below. Tickets can be purchased via www.freddyawards.org. The LIVE broadcast will take place on Thursday, May 25th at 7:00PM on WFMZ-TV.
