After three seemingly endless years, Maine's theatrical landscape has truly begun to come to life again after the pandemic. I am thrilled to be able to pen this article, having experienced a 2022 that saw the remarkable 'comebacks' of Maine's theatres. While the year was not without continued challenges, these brave, resilient companies managed to produce first-class live theatre for grateful audiences. These are my personal choices of the best in Maine for 2022, grouped by theatre company and show.

Due to high demand, chart-topping global superstar A Boogie wit da Hoodie has announced additional dates for his “ME VS MYSELF TOUR,” including a highly-anticipated hometown stop at New York City’s Barclays Center on March 4, 2023. Theatre for a New Audience has announced new preview, press, and opening dates for Denis Johnson’s Des Moines. Due to the detection of Covid within the Des Moines company, performances November 29 – December 3 have been canceled, with the production now beginning December 4.

 SMOKE's year-end Coltrane Festival “Countdown 2023” begins with the first of 16 nights led by a longtime friend of the club: living legend and renowned performer George Coleman. He joins forces with a most illustrious protégé, the great Eric Alexander for an intergenerational tenor saxophone summit meeting for the ages. Coleman and Alexander will be joined by dazzling pianist Emmet Cohen, rock-solid bassist John Webber and rousing drummer Joe Farnsworth. 

The Comancheros have entranced fans far and wide with their self-described 'Utter Dionysian chaos.' Notably, the three-piece comprised of lead singer Tanner Jones, drummer Michael 'Bobcat' Cook, and bassist/vocalist Jon 'Deere' Green, made their first appearance at Nashville's infamous Whiskey Jam in September 2022.

Discussing their cover of “Explosions,” songwriter/producer/bassist Rob Higgins noted, “‘Explosions' was the last thing we did together all in the same room at the same time. We recorded it in Toronto at my home studio, Phoebe Street, right before we were about to leave for six weeks overseas opening for Sebadoh.

Katy Galloway Productions has announced the London première of Smoke by Kim Davies, at Southwark Playhouse. The production opens on 3 February until 25 February with previews from 1 February.  

The Orange Tree Theatre has announced the final three plays of its 2022/23 season, as outgoing Artistic Director Paul Miller hands over to new Artistic Director Tom Littler.

Following productions in both Boston and London, Ken Urban’s play A Guide For The Homesick will have an industry presentation directed by Shira Milikowsky and executive produced by David Norwood on November 17, 2022.
