Smoke - 2023 West End History , Info & More

Southwark Playhouse
77-85 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BD, United Kingdom London

SMOKE by Kim Davies is a modern adaptation of August Strindberg's groundbreaking play, Miss Julie.

The story takes place in 2014 at a New York City ‘BDSM’ party. Julie (Meaghan Martin; Never Not Once - Park Theatre, Camp Rock) is a privileged college dropout dipping her toes into the world of S&M. John (Oli Higginson, The Last Five Years - Southwark Playhouse & West End, Bridgerton) is a cynical struggling artist willing to act as her guide. Their whirlwind encounter starts as a sexually charged game of cat and mouse. As they get to know each other, these seemingly self-possessed characters have their boundaries and notions of consent challenged. The consequences are irreparable and unsettling.

SMOKE is a piercingly witty and sometimes painful exploration of gender, sexuality & desire. This play champions sex positivity while also imploring us to better understand the nuances surrounding consent and the widely ostracised world of kink.

The play was a Critics' Pick of The New York Times and Time Out New York. This all-new production marks its London premiere and is co-directed by powerhouse female team, Polina Kalinina and Júlia Levai.

Review: Jackson Wang’s MAGICMAN 2 Vancouver Show Blends Storytelling, Dance, and Fan Interaction
by Alyson Eng - Apr 10, 2026

On April 5, Jackson Wang brought his MAGICMAN 2 World Tour to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, returning to Vancouver with a show that felt different from his 2023 stop. The setlist leaned heavily on MAGICMAN 2, released last July, carrying its darker themes and reflective tone into the live performance. Instead of fully depending on big production moments, the show focused on atmosphere and pacing, letting each song tell its own story while giving the night a more personal feel.

Review: ASYLUM KING, Collective Theatre
by Franco Milazzo - Jan 24, 2026

It was probably a dark, rainy night when Francesca Marlowe came across the mysterious case of the dead asylum seeker. Plumes of vape smoke flowing from her nostrils, she turns the facts over in her head. The man had not been in the country long, or at least not long enough to accumulate deadly enemies. The coroner’s report had all the right words in all the right places but looked about as truthful as an election manifesto. And, to cap it off, the corpse was found in a locked room after some days had passed.
