When Charlotte Symphony announced their 2025-26 schedule last March, they couldn’t have predicted the serendipity of two recent concerts a year later. Three subsequent events had to align. Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere recording of Jake Heggie’s Intelligence had to be released in August, and the recording, conducted by Charlotte Symphony music director Kwamé Ryan and starring soprano Janai Brugger, had to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

The first four-actor stage adaptation of The 39 Steps was written by Corble and Dimon and first premiered in 1966. It was subsequently rewritten by Patrick Barlow in 2005. It is a favorite for community theatres around the world, but it first began its life as a 1915 novel by John Buchan, which was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock for his 1935 spy thriller film.

When PARADE debuted on Broadway in December 1998 it won Tonys for Best Book and Best Original Score and six Drama Desk Awards. The 2023 revival was nominated for six Tony Awards itself, winning two. Now touring, the show, based on a true story, is in Los Angeles through July 12. And while it takes place 1913–1915, it is still just as relevant today as it was a century ago.
