GREASE, Porthouse-style, is a nostalgic reminder of the era of mid-1900’s and left those of a certain-age satisfied and maybe those of the Information Age/Digital Age asking “what was the attitude, grease and angst” all about.  

Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt follows multiple generations of an Austrian Jewish family from prosperity to despair — spanning over 50 years from 1899 to 1955. Now in its Chicago-area premiere at Writers Theatre, the late Stoppard’s final play includes a cast of 24 actors and many, many characters. Leopoldstadt (named after the Jewish quarter of Vienna) is a sprawling and ambitious work.

What is a pro-shot and how is it different than an adapted film? Pro-shot is an abbreviation for professionally shot, denoting a stage play that was captured in its native habitat: a theatre. In general, a pro-shot seeks to film the exact experience that audience members would have at a live performance of the show, in contrast with a feature film which actually adapts the piece into a new form, including different locations, the removal of theatrical aesthetic, and changes to make the script work as a film as opposed to as a live theatrical show.

This May, there are plenty of new titles for Broadway fans to watch, including the film recording of Suffs, the series adaptation of Amadeus, Aleshea Harris's Is God Is film, and more.

One day, I thought, you know what? There's one group of songs from the Disney studios, their animated films, that we all grew up with. So many songs that have become part of the American consciousness.

The WIZARD OF OZ is familiar to so many after all this time (and so many versions, including the Disney alternate universe ‘Wicked’ franchise) that one might be forgiven for thinking that no version is capable of any surprises anymore. AND YET. I am delighted to report that in this production lovingly done by Toby’s, there are delightful, unexpected moments, including puppetry and a surprising dance number, plus The Jitterbug.

Park University International Center for Music will present pianist Behzod Abduraimov on May 1 at the 1900 Building in Mission Woods, Kan., closing its 2025-26 concert season. Tickets are $30 for the public and $10 for students.

When I think of Steppenwolf, I often think of family members crying, screaming at one another, or some combination of the two. So the sparring between spouses Alice and Captain Edgar in August Strindberg’s 1900 play THE DANCE OF DEATH feels right at home. In a surprisingly funny and sharp version from accomplished Irish playwright Conor McPherson and direction from Steppenwolf ensemble member Yasen Peyankov, Kathryn Erbe and Jeff Perry go toe-to-toe as a troubled married couple about to celebrate their silver anniversary. 

MidAmerica Productions will present its 43rd concert season at Carnegie Hall, featuring 11 world premieres and a mix of sacred and secular music from March to June 2026.

In PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK: THE MUSICAL, Gold’s score makes it clear that this is not a mystery you simply watch. It’s a mystery you enter. The music becomes a kind of weather system that circles, shifts, and pulls the audience along.
