Sesame Street got its start at the height of the civil rights movement and the war on poverty, in answer to a simple but powerful question: could television help prepare less advantaged children for school? In 1969, the show's founders tapped researchers, entertainers, and other visionaries to create a “street” like no other, where colorful monsters, humans, and even grouches lived side by side. Today, Sesame Workshop – the nonprofit organization behind the iconic show, which has grown to reach kids and families in more than 150 countries and 70 languages – is proud to announce the start of Sesame Street's landmark 50th season.

Artistic and Executive Director Eda Holmes and Centaur Theatre's Board of Directors host Party in Paradise, the theatre's 2019 annual Gala, and a celebration like none other. Those in attendance can expect an enchanting night of celebrity-led live and silent auctions, an indulgent cocktail dînatoire and gifts. Legendary songstress Gloria Gaynor has announced the release of 'Man of Peace,' the next single off of her latest album, Testimony. The Grammy Award-winning singer has coordinated the release of the song, a cover of a Bob Dylan classic, to coincide with World Peace Day on September 21.  

a??a??a??a??a??a??a??The Ailey School, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, was selected to perform in the 2019 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Over 100 students from all programs of The Ailey School will answer the call of a?oeLet's Have a Parade,a?? the iconic phrase that has signaled the start of every Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1924.  Led by The Ailey School Co-Director Tracy Inman, the dancers from age seven to 25 will perform a dance inspired by the a?oeRocka My Soula?? finale of Alvin Ailey's American masterpiece Revelations.

This fall, Craft Recordings will reissue five albums from the Stax vault on 180-gram vinyl. In stores November 1st, the titles include The Bar-Kays'Gotta Groove, Melting Pot from Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Delaney & Bonnie's Home, David Porter's Victim of the Joke?...An Opera, and Johnnie Taylor's Who's Making Love. All LPs have been cut from their original analog tapes by Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl and manufactured at Memphis Record Pressing. These reissues are part of a yearlong celebration of Stax, and of the 50th anniversary of the legendary label's “Soul Explosion”—an era of rebuilding following its separation from Atlantic Records. During this period, the newly independent label not only signed fresh, emerging talent but also released an impressive collection of 27 albums and 30 singles in just a handful of months.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its inaugural presentation of visual art to be featured at the REACH, the Center's 21st-century expansion project. Ten works in a rich diversity of media will be on display at the facility upon opening, including six pieces on loan from Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland; sculptures by Joel Shapiro, Deborah Butterfield, and Roy Lichtenstein; and a wall hanging by Sam Gilliam. All works will be on view for the public beginning September 7, 2019.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New York City Center's Principal Dance Company, returns to the theater's stage from December 4, 2019 a?' January 5, 2020. Artistic Director Robert Battle leads Ailey's 32 extraordinary dancers during this annual five-week engagement, which has become a joyous holiday tradition.  The repertory features more than two dozen diverse works by some of the world's preeminent choreographers, including world premieres by Donald Byrd and Ailey dancer and newly announced Resident Choreographer Jamar Roberts, company premieres by Aszure Barton and Camille A. Third Man Records has revealed the details for the deluxe edition of the ANN ARBOR BLUES FESTIVAL 1969, a 50th anniversary celebration collecting 24 previously unheard songs by blues legends out this Friday, August 2, 2019.

In that same year, a group of visionaries in Pittsburgh founded the Renaissance & Baroque Society, which over time became one of the oldest and most revered organizations of its kind in America. Chatham Baroque, meanwhile, has been performing on stages throughout the world for 29 years and has established itself as one of the nation's most distinguished period ensembles.

The Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 is the most popular music festival you may have never heard of. Performers including Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and more came together in celebration of Black music, culture and pride. The free concerts, six in total, took place in Marcus Garvey Park with more than 100,000 people attending.
