Antigone - 2015 - Off-Broadway Tickets, News, Info & More

Brooklyn Academy of Music
651 Fulton Street Brooklyn, NY 11217

Should love or law guarantee the dignity of the dead? With unvarnished intensity, Oscar-winning actor Juliette Binoche (In-I, 2009 Next Wave), Olivier-winning director Ivo van Hove (Angels in America, 2014 Next Wave), and poet and MacArthur fellow Anne Carson—offering a new colloquial translation—pare Sophokles' great question to the tragic bone. In Thebes, Antigone has refuted King Kreon's (Patrick O’Kane) order: that her traitorous brother's body be left to rot outside the city gates. Vast monochrome videoscapes of sun and moon, sand and snow provide the backdrop to Van Hove's taut, unsentimental account of a woman who, as removed from life as she is from death, ends up taking both into her own hands.

BWW Review: ANTIGONE Is Exquisite Ode To The Past, Message For The Present at Seymour Centre by Brodie Paparella - Oct 11, 2016

Sport for Jove's reputation has gone from strength to strength this past year for presenting Sydney's most gripping, topical and connective theatre canon, as part of which Damien Ryan's adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone is absolutely at home. A transportation of an ancient Greek tragedy into the context of a very-near-future where its messages of female empowerment, the dangers of dictatorship, the real threat of toxic masculinity on communities, and of 'public opinion' on societal progress are as valid if not more for today's audiences. The ensemble is flawless and diverse, for which alone the ticket price is worth reinforcing a vision for Australian stages such as Sport for Jove have impressed. Andrea Demetriades is a force of nature in the title role, commanding change amongst the people on stage and in the stalls through a performance direct, deep and dynamic. Damien Ryan's text is nothing short of exquisite, which bears repetition and reiteration for its multi-lingual, multi-dimensional transformation of an archetypal narrative. To create something that evokes authentic ancient tragedy not with pity but with empathy is what made this production less theatre and more art in its strongest form with every passing cue and paragraph.

BWW Review: THE BURIALS Beautifully Portrays The Haunting, Heartbreaking Cost of Gun Violence in Schools by Rachel Weinberg - Oct 11, 2016

In Caitlin Parrish's new play THE BURIALS, Steppenwolf for Young Adults has found an informative and moving new play that tackles the realities of gun violence in schools with intensity and heart under the direction of Erica Weiss. Loosely based on the Greek tragedy ANTIGONE, THE BURIALS smartly addresses this topical issue from a personal and human perspective, which will allow school-aged audiences to engage with the material without ever feeling spoon-fed. THE BURIALS follows successful high school senior and social media lover Sophie Martin (the superlative Olivia Cygan), who has her world turned upside down when her younger brother Ben (a haunting Matt Farrabee) opens fire inside her school and kills 16 students and one teacher...using her father's guns. In the wake of this incident, Sophie, her younger sister Chloe (Becca Savoy) and their father, Ryan Martin (Coburn Goss)-an extremely conservative junior senator running for office-must process the experience under intense scrutiny from the public eye. In the case of Sophie and Chloe, they must also face their high school peers, who have been traumatized and some of whom look to the surviving Martin siblings to blame. When Mr. Martin decides to take a public stance advocating for the mandatory presence of guns in schools as a method of preventing future shootings, Sophie must decide if she will stand by her father-or if she will take a different stance.
