Ebony Repertory Theatre will present Ain't Misbehavin'. Based on the book by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr., the Tony-Award winning musical is directed by Wren T. Brown, ERT’s Founder & Producing Artistic Director, with Grammy Award-winning singer Ledisi (Selma; Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story) and NAACP Award-winning actor Chester Gregory.

A joyful revival that reanimates the spirit of the show that once jolted Broadway.

Structured as a non-stop song-and-dance revue without any dialogue, the Fats Waller tribute musical relies on its spunky live band and its crazy-good, five-person cast to sing a songbook filled with (mostly) joyful and (some) sorrowful jazz tunes. The show continues through Nov. 3, 2024 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, CA.

AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' OPENS AT SHORT NORTH STAGE

Short North Stage hopes to capture the fun as well as an unflinching look of the era as singers Christian McQueen (Ken), Israeljah Reign (Nell), Catara Brae (Charlaine), Isaac Tobbler (Andre), and Sydney Arterbridge (Armelia) lead the audience through a 30-song journey from the dive bars of Lennox Avenue to the infamous Cotton Club.

Complete casting and creative team has been announced for Short North Stage's upcoming production of Ain't Misbehavin', set to open in September at The Garden Theater.

That is one of the songs written by Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller. Ain’t Misbehavin’, the musical review of his music, is the current production at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace. Originally performed on Broadway in 1978, this was not a typical musical even though it won the Tony for best new musical. Nell Carter also won a Tony as best actress in a featured role as did the creator and director, Richard Maltby, Jr.

AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ is a great musical showcase, as well as a much-needed diversion. The hooting, hollering, clapping, and toe-tapping audience seemed to agree.

Music Mountain Theatre returns to performances on January 13 as their 2023 season begins with Ain't Misbehavin'. The production will have performances on weekends through January 29.

Just in time for the holidays, Rubicon Theatre Company has announced the fifth show of its 2022-2023 “Welcome Home” season, the 1978 Tony Award-winning musical celebration, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’.

Thomas “Fats” Waller, a pioneer in jazz piano, was a prolific composer, writing over 400 songs in his lifetime, with hits like “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose” even making it into the Grammy Hall of Fame. So, it is no surprise that in 1978 a Broadway Musical, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ premiered featuring dozens of Waller’s songs and a cast of five African American actors, including a young Andre de Shields (HADESTOWN) and the late, great Nell Carter who won a Tony Award for her performance. Since its premiere, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ has lived on, thrilling audiences all around the world including the latest production at the Titusville Playhouse in Titusville, FL – an energetic and electric production that sizzles from beginning to end.

Not only an accomplished director and choreographer, McIntyre’s Broadway performance credits include Anything Goes with PATTI LUPONE, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with DONNY OSMOND, and the original company of Once on this Island. 

The Encore's first offering of Season 14 bursts onto The Maas stage September 15 – October 2. AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' will feature direction and choreography by “The Mayor of Broadway” GERRY MCINTYRE, whose energetic choreography was last seen at The Encore in the Season 13 opener, Smokey Joe's Café.

To be clear, there is absolutely nothing about this production that is dull, dated, or dusty. The joint is most certainly jumpin’ for an evening full of rowdy, raunchy and humorous songs that capture the love longing and zest for life in the 1920’s/’30s.
